The last paragraph was really interesting about pronunciations, that is pretty terrible isn't it?
I flicked around the radio and TV dials. No one came within a bull's roar of getting Kerobokan right, let alone the Balinese capital, Denpasar, or the resort precinct of Seminyak. For the record, it's not Ker-Robber-kan. It's Kra-BOKE-un, a light accent on the second syllable, as it generally is with Bahasa Indonesia. D'n-PAHS-ar, not DEN-pasar. I don't expect the commercial lot to get it right but you'd think the ABC might give it a go.
Nitpicking, perhaps. Yet the same reporters are aware they'd be laughed off the air if they pronounced, say, Illinois or Arkansas or Connecticut phonetically. Because it's only Indonesia, developing nation and all that, near enough is good enough. We Australians are hopelessly bad at our neighbours' languages.
Solved! Go to Solution.

I think it comes down to a level of professionalism. the average person may not know the correct pronounciation of place names and people's names but imo journalists and politicians should make sure they are saying things correctly. It is the same with Sochi. one of the morning shows had a very cringeworthy segment about how it should be pronounced which made the presenters look stupid and ignorant. it doesn't take much effort to find out correct pronounciations.

Because it is incorrect. If a child pronounces a word incorrectly they are generally corrected, why not politicians and newsreaders?
I'm with you donna, pronunciation might seem irrelevant, just like correct spelling etc, but language is how we communicate - maybe I'm just a stick in the mud but do we really want it to get to the point where we can no longer understand each other and speak and write in initials. (OK that may be taking the point a little far down the road but it's raining and I'm a little restless.)

No-one at the ABC or SBS can pronounce Chile correctly. The foreign editor of the Australian who often struts his knowledge of Asia cannot pronounce Afghanistan, Pakistan etc correctly. IMO it is insulting to those neighbours. We would bristle if someone called our country Australeeah.
