that Ian Thorpe is gay?

It was front page news on one paper I saw at the shop this morning.

why do we need to know? what did it matter? we don't have headlines saying people are het?

Poor guy has been hounded for years over his soxuality, I hope he finds some peace and happiness now.

Hes on JJJ and is a comedian.

Poor Tom Ballard needing someone else to help him come out- it would have been easier for him if Thorpy had!

And not all gay people refer to themselves as queer.

He wasnt just talking about himself.

'I don't think queer people in the public eye have a "responsibility" to come out as Thorpe has done'

I agree with that. It is not a big issue to the general population imo.

Re: Did we really need to know

I do not see how any ones sexuality is anyone else's business be they a public figure or not. I also don't see how because someone is a public figure there is a responsibility for them to be a role model for anyone.
I feel if you are disappointed that someone you don't know other than seeing them in TV or in the news behaves in such a way that affects your children's upbringing it reflects on your failings as a parent not on theirs as a person.
I also don't think that it is anyone else's business how much money is paid for a service. I'm pretty sure most here would be tight lipped on their income choosing not to make it public yet feel the need or right to know someone else's because they are in the limelight in some capacity.
Thorpe WAS a swimmer what does his sexual preferences have to do with his performance in the pool?

Re: Did we really need to know

They asked Julia G. if her partner was gay didn't they?. Just typical of journalists/interviewers pushing to get a story that will make sensationalist headlines. The rest of the population can't be blamed for that,
