Funny thing is, all through my school years, my aunt insisted that our ancestor was a soldier..........then when have a convict in you family tree became fashionable, suddenly he became a convict.

It was fashionable after the wars to have " brave soldiers " in the family who fought for king & country. ( fair enough too )
Funny thing was our family come from good German stock. A couple of my ancestors had to change their name to an English sounding name in order to enlist. The family frowned upon these chaps for dropping the family name and it took decades for the family to admit these ex soldiers where part of the family.
War does strange things to people !!!
