Discussion thread for Wood Photo Challenge

There are already some fantastic images being put up. I think this week might be as good as the rust one was.

Agora, what camera do you have?  If I could get my $300 camera to do that I wouldn't bother with a big fancy one.

i have a pentax optio E70L.  the pics are not bad but the batteries run out really quickly.  i have a charger and rechargable batteries that i use but that's an issue too, because it takes hours for those batteries to charge.  the upside is that it's very portable and fits easily into my handbag.  the fancy ones witht the big lenses are painful to carry around.

it is cute.

the one i used in my pic was a vintage repro i sold some time ago.

below is a pic of the vintage originals.

Architectmade Duck and Duckling by Hans Bolling at kiitos

do you know the story behind those teak ducks?

in copenhagen 1959, having seen a duck family crossing the road, a policeman to stopped the traffic to let them pass.  it was this event which was captured in a famous photo that made international headlines that hans bolling was inspired to create the "duck family".

the city later used the event to promote tourism.

That's a lovely story.  I will keep my eye out for one in the future.

Re: Discussion thread for Wood Photo Challenge

There's a road sign in Tamworth that says Caution Ducks Crossing, hmm Or maybe it's just a caution sign with pictures of ducks.

The wood onlays are beautiful. I have no idea where my squirrel one was made, it looks very similar to AM3's italian one. The photo doesn't do it justice.

Re: Discussion thread for Wood Photo Challenge

What is blackwood? is it black wattle?

My dad hand carved fishing lures out of cedar. I wish I could take a photo of them but them but they are in Walgett.

oooo lightbulb moment. My sister has some and I'm visiting her this weekend.

EDIT:  and the reason why I went from black wood to fishing lures is my Dad carved something out of black wattle and said it was the hardest wood he'd ever come across, which then made me think of other stuff he had made. He wasn't a craftsman, just did it for fun when he got old

yeah, true.  however it would involve a trip to my parents' house and i don't want to upset their space, so on further consideration, i'm gonna let this one go.

Re: Discussion thread for Wood Photo Challenge

My dad managed to carve the infinity symbol out of Jarrah.  I don't know how he managed it but it's really good.  I will take my camera or phone to my sister's this week as she has it now.
