Displacing Indigenous Australians

I'm extremely confused, are they or aren't they?

Funding for?

Funding for schools, medical, social services, communiity services - the usual stuff that the govt is happy to fund for any OTHER community.

Including all those bludgers I see on Bondi Beach every day, eh?

Re: Displacing Indigenous Australians

I think those bludgers on Bondi Beach are safe.

But if they were indigenous Australians then a certain amount of venom would be directed at them from the media and our politcians (and Ebays Community Spirit). There would be calls about something needing to be done about them, arguments about 'our' taxes supporting their welfare.

And Abbott would be in the news discussing that their choice is a 'lifestyle' choice. Which of course it IS in THIS case.

Re: Displacing Indigenous Australians

And then you and I would be accused of "stereotyping".

Apparently it is acceptable to stereotype indigenous (or Muslim) people on these boards but if you point out that there are out of work people bludging or behaving like bogans in Bondi , or say Mt Druitt, you are accused using stereo types.

Go figure!

There are 274 remote communities in WA alone. There are not enough Doctors, Nurses, Teachers and Social Workers in the bush TOWNS - where do you propose to find another 274 of each to maintain services to each of these remote communities? Then of course, each one of those has to have facilities - so operating room, exray centre and on and on. Next we'll be sending a Doctor, Nurse, Teacher and Social Worker to each Cattle station and / or Farm in the outback for FREE. Totally unsustainable and totally unrealistic.

OK, the people want to stay on their Ancestoral Land, but practicalities must come into it somewhere.

Where do you drawer the line? Tony Abbott uses tax payers money to attend celebrations not to do with his job, how can he or any other hypocrite in politics make such decisions about indigenous communities?

Specifically this:

"I actually applaud you for coming here today.

"Can I say to you no Aboriginal people will be forced from their lands...no Aborginal people will be forced from their communities.

"People will not be forced from their tradtional lands."

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Earlier in the rally, Aboriginal Legal Services CEO Dennis Eggington said the eyes of the world were watching Australia.

"I want you to stop and think about this sacred land that has been home to our people for tens of thousands of years – our land that is central to our culture," he said.

"Every gumnut, every gumtree, every grain of sand on every shore, every insect and every animal in our holy land and in memory of our people.

"We are part of the earth and it is part of us."

Federal Labor Perth MP Alannah MacTiernan said ....."Aboriginal people have the right to shape their own destiny."

Greens  Robin Chapple said both the state and federal government had no idea about the importance of land to indigenous people.

"We are talking about land – Aboriginal land – your land," he said.

"We are here to make sure you keep you land."

At an earlier rally at Forrest Chase in the CBD, Amnesty International indigenous rights manager Tammy Solenec told the 700-strong crowd that supporting remote communities wasn't difficult.

"We all know living in remote communities is not a 'lifestyle choice'," she said.

"Aboriginal people have a custodianship of a deep spiritual connection to this land.

"And under Native Title laws imposed upon them, they must show a continuous connection to the land to prove their title.

"If they are forced off their homelands, it will be much harder to secure native title."

Opposition Aboriginal affairs spokesman Ben Wyatt said the Barnett government's plan to close almost 150 remote communities proved they had no understanding of the importance of culture and land to Aboriginal people.

"The government has taken a dramatic turn in the last six months in its very disrespectful approach to Aboriginal affairs," he said.

Not a lot of concern for the actual welfare or benefits for the proposed "displaced" Aboriginals is evident from that article.

It appears that a whole lot of educated people, who chose their destiny by leaving their forbears' community i.e. Tammy Solenec, Dennis Eggington, and other Aboriginal organizations, etc are fighting, not necessarily for displaced people, but for the Native Title of the land.

Would it be possible perhaps, that they are seeking a suitable compensation which would allay the loss of their cultural closeness to the land?

Let's you and I take our families to some remote spot and set up a community there, but before we go, let's talk to the government and ask them to fund it and assign a Doctor, Nurse, Social Worker to go with us, and also ask them for funding to build some houses for us and a small Town Hall for our use, put some roads in (dirt will do) - I think the government will be cracking their necks to do that for us.

Mean spirited..................... but seriously, those people didn't take their families to some remote spot and set up a community there.................. they were already there, forced off large tracts  their lands already to a small area.
