Do you and your OH keep money/assets separate?

I was taken aback when my workmate told me that she and her OH keep separate accounts/assets, and what they have brought themselves is their own. So all the major things (she has a unit, he has a house, cars) are not jointly owned/paid for. Its not like its a new relationship they have been together for eight years and have a child together.

Is this a relatively common thing for couples these days to do? Is it all to do with trust (or lack thereof?)

Couldnt imagine doing that with my OH, it would seem weird, IMO.

the more things change the more they stay the same

Hubby and I dont but I've told the kids that if they have bought things before entering a relationship that it remains in just their name and a prenup before a marriage is a good idea too.

A good idea but any thing purchased as a couple is joint property as is any capital gain on property during the relationship even if owned prior to relationship

separate and always have.

I have no idea what he earns - after some recent disagreements and unhappiness, he put a stop on me finding out anything via his lawyer.

Not that I care - I earn my own money.

If we split - and we are  thinking of it, he can keep his stuff / car - I don;t want it anyway.

It is just stuff and I would buy my own new things anyway and would prefer that.

I would take the stuff I purchased - eg nice bed linen, kitchen stuff, Laura Star iron, computer.

He can keep the furniture / bed / table  / lounge etc and  he bought the TV, so I would not take that and am not interested in any of it anyway. Lounge / bed is old now although looks newish

I would prefer to start afresh anyway

We don't have separate ownership of stuff... but all cars etc are reg. in my name 'cos it is easier..... same with insurance etc.

House in both names...... I currently have 2 cars... he has a 4wd, a boat and a motorhome (all in my name)

We have a joint bank account and I have  one of my own. Business is his......

After many years of arguing over money and things he has his and I have mine. We pay bills together but what we make we keep.  He has a lot more than me but I don't mind as I am a lot better off health wise. Since we stopped arguing over money .
