Religious thing?
Religion being what it is today I would not think anyone would bother fasting, could be wrong?

He should get lucky Latina. He's been practising all week 😄
You been spying on me? :^O
I just got back in from fishing.
No Barra, but caught 3 decent sized bream so it looks like it's fish for dinner tomorrow night after all.
Now all I gotta do is decide how I'll cook 'em, barbied fillets with a bit of garden fresh green salad or whole stuffed with lemongrass baked in foil, with stir fried spring veggies.
Decisions, decisions, oh what a hard life it can be at times 😞

Whilst I am allergic to seafood, I can cook it beautifully.
Pop the bream on a piece of buttered alfoil. Slice a lemon and layer it along the bream and pop a healthy (or unhealthy lol) dollop of butter on top and roll the foil up and fold over the ends. BBQ for about 5 mins on each side on the grill part (not the flat plate).

Almost exactly how I do it, only I use stalks of lemongrass rather than slices of lemon because I have plenty of it growing in the veggie garden all year round.

Oh, and I place the foil wrapped fish on a wire rack and shut the lid of the barbie down so it cooks more evenly and slowly.

Do you think fasting for religious reasons is silly in general or just the Catholic practice of fasting on Good Fridays? (I think Orthodox Christians do that as well during their Lent)
Eve - I think the no meat on Good Friday rule is silly because I have yet to meet someone who can tell me why they are fasting.
That goes with fasting in any religion. In fact, it goes for any custom or tradition.
I just can't understand how anyone can follow a custom without understanding the reason they are doing it.

Did ya not read the catholic rule book??? SHeesh. You can't join their club if you don't follow the rule book.
ALthough I do agree with the last point. I have asked Believers of the bible why they believe it's the word of God. The explanation. Coz' it is.

I was a MEMBER of their club bob but still couldn't get an explanation. All you get is some vague talk of abstinence. Abstinence for what purpose?
I have Serbian friend who is deeply religious (orthodox). He fasts 3 days out of every week. All he drinks is water and eats nothing but small portions of rice. No TV, no computer.
I don't agree with what he does but I respect why he does it because he can explain it to me. He says he limits his food because everytime his stomach growls it is a reminder that he exists and so thinks of God at that moment. He does without TV etc because he doesn't want anything to distract him from that thought.
Personally, I think there are better things in life to think about 24/7 but at least he knows why he does it.

I like that. 🙂 And that's what fasting is about. It is time to reflect, to honour. Good Friday is when Jesus died on the cross for us so fasting is a small personal sacrifice. I realise that it seems illogical to you since you don't believe in the existence of God but hope it makes more sense as to the reasons behind fasting for religious reasons.
I actually admire Muslims for their dedication during Ramadan. I dont think I could do it.

Bob, you really are a worry.
You have been told dozens of times by several on these boards, that there is no such thing as hellfire and the punishment of burning forever. Eve has even quoted you the latest Catholic doctrine that denies the existence of the old Hell as it was traditionally understood.
As far as the Law is concerned - the Law was given to the Israelites for their benefit. There were the 10 main laws - that everyone knows as the 10 Commandments, and then there were HUNDREDS of other laws. Some examples that I suggest would have applied then and in Jesus time, and still do. eg There was a law that when they had to go to the toilet, to take a stick and go to the outside of the camp - why do you think that was? There was another law about washing hands before eating; laws about anyone that handled a dead body had to be quarantined for a certain period - Health & Hygiene ring a bell. May I suggest that the people didn't know why those laws were given, but, they had to follow them because God did know and in that sense - NOT ONE WORD OF THE LAW HAS CHANGED !!
Let's face it, it took western medical science hundreds of years to work out that germs existed. The mind boggles - the Doctors would work in the morgue dissecting dead bodies and then come straight up to treat a live patient - most of whom DIED from what we now know as infection. Mankind didn't know about germs - but God did. If Medical Science had taken notice of the Bible they would certainly have twigged that there was some reason for all those laws being given???
So those hundreds of laws that were given to the Israelites still apply today - NOT ONE WORD OF THE LAW HAS CHANGED !!, Science now calls them scientific laws but they have existed for thousands of years.

Bob understands very well. He is just being a.....well, he wants to provoke a heated debate. He wants to be entertained. Personally, I could think of better things but as Martini suggested, it comes down to personal preference 😉
