Do you object to BAG INSPECTIONS at stores?

Do you object to staff asking to inspect your bag? (they are only doing their job)

Will you shop at a  store that asks to inspect your bag or will you go elsewhere?

Do bag inspections and security checks help to stop shop lifting and keep prices down?

If you object WHY?

Do you think that objecting to a bag inspection makes a person look guilty or they are guilty?

Rememer that its a condition of entry at just about every major /medium/small store in Australia

What is in a woman's handbag is usually personal things, not even my husband would go looking in my bag, I dont posess a large handbag, only small ones, and I dont care if they call security or not, no one looks at my personal items in my bag..........

I know my daughter was asked to open her very small bag on exiting JB Hi FI, which she knew probably wasn't right, but showed it anyway becuase she doesn't like to make a fuss..

I can understand that but I think it would be a good idea to write to the store and bring it the management's attention.  Obviously not adequate training.

I don't object to them looking, I have nothing to hide, always have a handbag and automatically show them as I am leaving. Who could be bothered with all the drama of trying to score points with the poor worker, their job's bad enough without us adding to it.

Now if anyone (read family) try to dive in my bag lookoutWoman LOL I hate being told my bag is a mess.

purple - you should check your State's fairtrading website for bag checking policy for stores to see if there is a size limit for checking bags. Once you know that, you are quite within your rights to refuse to open your personal handbag if it is smaller than the size allowed to be checked.

How many people on this thread (besides me) has asked any shop assistant about this

Not me and probably not meep.. as we understand our customer rights and responsiblities from reading the NSW Fair trading site.

Others, many don't care, flick open the bag, move on.. doesn't worry them.

Anytime I have been in JB Hi Fi they just say *have a nice day* and they have those security gate things to walk through that go off if you have an item

Yes I agree with that. It was awhile ago and I wanted to call the store later and inform them what happened, but she didnt want to. As she was over 18 at the time, she really needed to do that herself.

I was in the car still about to go into the store, so missed being there at the time.

They can do what they like to detain me, I dont care, I have 2 solicitors in the family & they can deal with it..........I have worked in shops before, and never was any customer asked to show what was in their handbag, no matter what size..........it is personal......

They tend to 'target' young people. As my daughter was only in the store for a minute or so, I guess that aroused suspicion. Enough time to snatch something stick it in your tiny handbag and get out of there quick!.

Anyway, here in Melbourne the majority of shops have those electronic bars that you walk through, and if you have something that you havent paid for they go off.....

It is basically only the supermarkets that dont have them........

If your know your rights as a customer, purple, and explain to the store staff, why they are in the wrong.. they won't be detaining you.
