I agree Tony Abbott didn't mean to offend, but he did offend and needs to be wiser in future.
I don't find birth mother offensive but in this situation I can definitely see why the mothers attending the apology did. They are well entitled to be offended.
I'm kind of amazed that some seem unable to see why. 😞

what a storm in a teacup.........nothing happens without "someone" turning it into a political dispute on here.
Exactly!

It is political, I mentioned Tony Abbott in the OP, sorry if you missed it
As patchoo observantly pointed out, the poll was to ask if it offends you.
I thought it was quite straightforward 🙂
Has anyone that has posted in this thread been forced to adopt a child out?

Adoptive parents could be seen as an offensive term

The Question was
do you think Birth Mothers is an insensitive comment ?
that isn't the same as asking me if it offends me ?
an insensitive comment would be one that didn't consider someone's sensitivies wouldn't it ?

anyway, I'm glad that he apolgised .I hope his speech writer does his/her homework in future.I'm now more aware that the term Birth Mother may upset Mothers who had their babies/children forcibly taken.Thinking about it I can fully understand why.
more appropriate for modern day voluntary adoption

The term 'birth mother' means exactly that, a woman who gave birth to a child. I seriously cannot see how it would be deemed offensive.
