Do your children have "jobs" around the house? What is each job worth?

My 6 y/o and 2/3rds has jobs they are:

- Make sure her dog's water bowl is filled with clean water

- Fill up her dog's bowl with dry food

- Brush and wash the dog weekly (she is supervised with the brushing)

- Make sure the dog is walked at least once a day

- All toys packed up at the end of the day

- Fill up the bird seed feeder when it runs out

- Put her dirty clothes in the hamper
- Put her breakfast dishes in the dishwasher.

- Check the vegie garden daily for anything that needs to be picked.

We are currently working on how to make the bed, but she has a double bed and lacks coordination so she still needs a lot of help with this.

She doesn't receive any payment for ANY of her jobs.  I believe that as a family, we all have to work together and contribute.  No one pays me to do any housework.

She does however, get given money for her school cafe once a week.

She also gets 1 Doctor Who micro figure on the weekend ($3) if she does all her readers during the week.

She also gets 15 minutes of iPad time a weekday once she has finished her homework from the psychologist.

One of my friends was horrified that she has so many jobs, but I believe having jobs is teaching her responsibility (especially when it comes to looking after pets).

What do others do with their kids?  I run a pretty strict household in many ways, but quite liberal in others.

well he was a very nice chap, an old school moderate with a big flagpole in his front yard. when he passed on a eulogy was read in the federal parliament. the SA member who read it mentioned my mothers hard work in the speech. i better not say who.

It is quite normal for families to disagree on politics, John Howard etc

Tried the pocket money thing but really should they be paid for doing what they should be doing anyway as being part of a family?

Children are always wanting something, I have always used the strategy when they ask for something to look around and get them to do a few things before granted permission or money or anything else they may want.

Im not sure a six year old should be walking the dog daily.

We dont pay the kids for contributing to the household tasks.

We all make the mess, we all clean the mess.

It's so interesting to hear what other people do and how they view it!  I love it!

bunny - why should a six year old not walk the dog daily?  (She always goes with an adult).  The dog needs to be walked.  He is her dog (a medical companion dog).

Obviously if they day is very hot they don't go.  But otherwise they do.  And an adult goes with her.

Our 2 children get pocket money, but it not tied to household jobs. They are a part of the family and are expected to help. Some jobs are daily, others get done when needed.

- keep bedroom clean, vacuum on the weekend

- Keep their bathroom tidy

- feed the dog, change water every morning, water vege garden with that water

- Take rubbish out, one does normal, one does recycle

- They need to wash and dry the dishes once per week each ,we have a dishwasher, but it is a really good opportunity for them to work together to complete a task.

I don't make them change their bedding or help with the washing, but if its not in the laundry it doesn't get done, they soon learn.
