Dogs in apartments (Inner city living) - Where do they pee?

How can you have a dog in an apartment with no yard? (only a balcony).  

Where does the dog pee?  

Does it hold it in all day whilst you are at work?  

Or do you put like fake grass on the balcony?  

Train it to pee in the shower?  :O?

I have always had a yard with a dog door so the dogs could pee when needed and these questions might sound stupid but I can't find the answer anywhere!

you can train dogs to use kitty litter.  But google dog loo's and there are quite a few that are designed to be used inside.

Before the green grass dog loo it was a case of a litter tray in the bathroom but my dog was only small - a Cairn Terrier.

There was no way I would walk down three flights of stairs to take him out at midnight.

It was bad enough stepping over the drug users draped in deathly fashion in the stair wells during the day but no way at night time would I do it by myself.

The dog is quite a small maltese X, and the apartment is a 3rd floor one but it has an elevator not stairs.  I am not worried about the poo as the dog is walked morning and evening and does it's poo whilst on the walk.

Firstly, make sure the dog has access to the balcony during the day.

Catch some of its pee in a jar or something while you are out.

Spread the pee onto the part of the balcony where you want it to pee.

Let it smell the pee and immediately express your approval.

The dog wants to make you happy and get your approval.

But first they need to understand what you want them to do.

They do not speak our language so you must speak their language.

Poor doggie, alone all day in an apartment.
