Harmony Day - Thursday March 21st

Harmony Day is celebrated on March 21st every year and is to celebrate Australia's cultural diversity.  It is also the United Nation's International Day for the elimination of Racial Discrimination.

My daughter's school (and many others) encourage children to wear a National costume of their family's origins or to bring a flag of that country - or to wear orange - the colour of Harmony Day.

I said to my white skinned, red headed daughter "What National costume do you want to wear?".  She has a great interest in her ancestors so is aware our family's origins are German, Irish, Norwegian, Scottish and British.  As a 10th generation born in Australia, we've gotta go back fairly far to find them!

So she answers "Aunie R (my brother's wife) is from Japan.  Our family is Japanese too.  I want to wear a Kimono".  😮  Ok that's cool - but her summer Kimono is way too small now and the others we have are adult size.  Even at 5' tall her auntie's are too big.

So I've been busy adjusting a kimono style dressing gown (from Japan) for the last few hours.  :^O

I bet she's the only 'ranga wearing a Kimono tomorrow!

Orange????? the colour of Harmony Day!

The annual Orange Order (formed 1796)  marches in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and elsewhere would seem to indicate otherwise.
