It depends on how hooked you are on reading what people write about you. I've probably hada few unpleasant things said about me on twitter over the years, but I'll never know because I'm not a twit - never have been - and my Facbook page is only viewble by friends.

Works for me.
I'm secure enough to not care what other people think about me, nor do I probably know in most cases.
However, this bloke courted social media attention, made a conscious effort to shame people he didn't agree with, ON CAMERA FOR THE PURPOSE OF POSTING ON SOCIAL MEDIA, not caring about the effects on them or, more importantly, the innocent bystanders present. Karma.
I won't even mention what I think about a 'loving' family who only seem to provide support after death. Every single person who dies young, even a career criminal, apparently is a good boy who was loved by his family.
