Drug testing drivers

NEW legislation will bring in compulsory blood tests for drugs for drivers involved in crashes that cause a fatality or seriously injure
someone. The new laws will be a first in Australia.

Just saw it on facebook via a local paper, but couldnt see any news articles about it.

I think its a great idea, why werent they already doing it I wonder?

Presumably they already test for alcohol in these situations. Drugs are just as bad, some worse, as far as hindering the ability to drive safely.

I wonder exactly what drugs they will test for?

I thought they already did that. Read some idiot booked for doing 115kms  over the speed limit on the Hume Hway yesterday, I think he should lose his license in Australia forever.

I would have thought they did too, but perhaps it was never compulsary before now?

Yep I agree the knuckleheads should be disqualified for life, sadly that doesnt stop them driving though.

I thought so too, Boris.  Now that is fast.  Double the speed limit?  And unfortunately, some of those people who break the speed limits and are banned from driving, take no notice of the law.

Can we be tested for our own body-produced adrenaline?

I thought the RBT already tested for drugs, obviously a blood test is more accurate, I totally support any measure that gets drunks/druggie off the road for good.

maybe it's for some prescription and over the counter drugs - some of them are included in drug testing at work sites.

Police already do tests for drugs when they stop you on the road and also when they have their booze buses out.

Public transport drivers should be tested for alcohol and drugs at the start of their shift.
