Due Diligence?

PORTLAND, Ore. – A nanny accused of leaving two small children in a car during sweltering weather in May while she was inside a tanning salon pleaded not guilty to charges Friday.

Kristin M. Jones, 23, of Gresham was arrested after someone noticed the toddler and a month-old child inside a Dodge Caravan with the windows up in 90-degree heat, according to a court document.

Police were called to Sunblaze Tan on May 14. When the police officer arrived he saw the two children inside the car covered in sweat and screaming, the court document said. He immediately got them out, and while he was doing so the children’s nanny, Jones, walked out of the tanning salon.

She initially told police that she had left the children in the car with their mother, but a DHS caseworker confirmed that their mother was at work all day. Additionally, a witness told police that he only saw Jones in the car.

According to the court document, Jones admitted to police that she had left the children alone in the car. She told police that she lied to them because, “I was scared.”

She is charged with first-degree criminal mistreatment, recklessly endangering another person and second-degree child neglect. She is also charged with driving with a suspended license.

She pleaded not guilty to all charges.
