You are so correct Icy - it is all about the big bucks these days. The days of striving to excel purely for the satisfaction of it seem long gone ...... in all sports ...... and these things impact not only on specific clubs/players but right across the codes/sports.
It teaches the up and coming generation of sportspeople very little (if anything at all) about the ethics of being a good sportsperson. Of course I am speaking generally and thankfully there are exceptions but they are becoming few and far between.

I'm very disheartened about it, Laney ๐

They have all been charged with conduct that is unbecoming or likely to prejudice the interests or reputation of the Australian Football League, or bringing the game of football into disrepute contrary to AFL rule 1.6," Dillon said.
He said after a review of the evidence, he had formed the view "the parties had a case to answer". He said all parties had been informed of the charges.
Dillon said no player would be served an infraction notice - at this time.
โโIn relation to the Essendon players I can advise that although WADA has declared AOD9604 is a banned substance, on the information currently before the AFL there is no specific anti-doping rule violation attributed to any individual player for the use of AOD9604 or any other prohibited substance,โโ Dillon said.
Hird,Reid ,Thompson and Corcoran will fight this .hope they stick it to the AFL.
very poorly handled from the start .
reckon there is alot more to come out myself !

yeah I'm disappointed too Icy, I always saw James Hird as such a nice guy, but now I'm not so sure about his honesty

lets hope the AFL actually does something about this situation or they are gonna be a laughing stock amongst other sporting associations ...
essendon has to be penalized .... as do the people charged .... this should be dealt with before the finals .... or the finals will be forever tainted in the eyes of all the other clubs ...
I also think demetriou needs to be given the boot .... due to his lack of integrity in regards to the situation .... I see he is now in line to be offered another position in charge of a different sport .....
there needs to be an independent commitee investigating and handling out penalties ... not a boys club who will let them off with a slap on the hand .... because they are a long standing club ... to me this means they should have known better, so deserve a harsher penalty .....
they also need to be put on probation for a couple of years to make sure it doesnt happen again .... !

couldn't agree more with what you've posted Peela. it's all happened under his watch... and he never seems to do much except go on overseas trips

well here are the charges

I don't think the AFL have handled this very well, thewy should've been transparent from the beginning.
and now Hird is going to sue the AFL
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-08-22/hird-suing-the-afl/4904108
the trouble with all this is that the players may come baxk and sue Essendon and the AFL in 20 years time if they get any health problems associated with the weird injections
