I think you'll find that TWO other CSG licences were cancelled, not just the one over Sydney.

The exploration permits have been cancelled for a wait and see pause of an indefinite period.

"We are open to bringing these licences back and we want [CSG] to go into areas that we are satisfied it can go and the community is satisfied," Mr Baird said. "This is part of our pause and reset."

Controversial industry

Gas exploration has been a controversial issue for the government. The prospect of large protests against Metgasco's operations in the Northern Rivers region near Bentley prompted Mr Roberts to suspend the company's licence last year.

Santos has also copped a fine and faced protests over its CSG plans for Narrabri, while AGL's CSG operations near Gloucester continue to be dogged by contamination concerns and unease about the company's transparency.

John Watts, a spokesman for anti-CSG group, Gloucester Groundswell, dismissed Wednesday's announcement as "a cheap publicity stunt".

"It has nothing to do restoring integrity and accountability to the coal seam gas industry," Mr Watts said. "The areas being bought back have no commercial quantities of gas."

"If the Minister was serious about integrity and accountability he would immediately suspend AGL's CSG licence in Gloucester where it has no social licence, where it has failed to honestly consult the community and where it has been vandalising the beautiful environment."

yeah, not because of our govt though, more because there wasn't enough there worth going after

from the same link

PEL 437 covered about 5600 square kilometres in a mostly pastural region of the state's central north, stretching from the Gwydir Highway to the Queensland border.

A spokesman for Pangaea said the unlisted miner had explored for CSG but had handed back its permit last month after finding little of interest to exploit.

Re: Faces of the future declare web war

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-03-06/hunter-valley-village-move-coal-mine-bulga/6284938

The New South Wales Hunter Valley village of Bulga could be relocated to avoid the impacts of a massive mine expansion, the state's Planning Assessment Commission (PAC) suggests.

It is one of three options put forward by the commission to address the noise, air quality and visual impacts from the Mount Thorley-Warkworth mine expansion, which it has been given the green light.

It proposed the New South Wales Government and Coal and Allied foot the bill for the relocation of the village of about 350 people, with the state delivering all new infrastructure and the company paying for construction of new houses.

The commission noted that any relocation and associated planning would need the involvement of Bulga residents.

It acknowledged the company's relationship with the community needed to be rebuilt, suggesting it engage an independent mediator as a first step towards reconciliation.

move a whole town to make way for a mine?? surely they must be kidding?

Re: Faces of the future declare web war

Re moving a town for mining--check out Yallourn Vic.

The classic is the mine co built the town for the workers at the nearby mine.

Then found out the best coal reserve was--under the town............................Richo.
