Yallourn, Victoria was a company town in Victoria, Australia built between the 1920s and 1950s to house employees of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria, who operated the nearby Yallourn Power Station complex. However, expansion of the adjacent open-cut brown coal mine led to the closure and removal of the town in the 1980s. They are not allowed to pump it straight back out without treatment.
They have water quality standards that have to be achieved before water is put back into waterways.
Same reason Water used for growing rice can't be put back into a river.
yes BUT who keeps an eye the mining company to make sure they do the right thing? They didn't do the right thing in Mongolia. They are in charge of their water monitoring and hey guess what, mining companies lie. They also don't give a rats clacker if they do break the rule and get caught out by the EPA because a 5 thousand dollar fine is peanuts to them. Yes there will be storage pits. It is feasible these pits will overflow into the waters in a major rain event.

That Bulga story popped my little blissful bubble yesterday. The Bulga people have already fought and won against the mines expansion plans. They won it in the High Courts and yet here they are still fighting. No should mean No.
I was saddened to read the PAC recommended moving the town because it would be too close to the mine. 3km's, same as Breeza and we get nothing.

Too often they ignore the rules and pay the small fine when caught out.

Thats not a reason to stop the mine though.
Plenty of antis break the rules and the law as well, and ignore the fines.
You can't be serious.
You think destroying the underground water supply is OK?
You think that's comparable with antis (whatever they are) are breaking the rules (whatever they are)?
As sure as the submarine issue was part of the Japan Free Trade Agr so is the Chinese Shenhua mine part of the Chinese FTA
