February national unemployment hit 10.9%

We have been told time and time again that we are on a  good wicket and that people  are complaining for no reason... I know for a fact that people are on struggle street... I could not really understand how our interest rates are low because people are not spending, new housing numbers are incredibly low, businesses are sacking people and/or shutting up shop and the government is saying we have never had it better..

we hear that the unemployment rates are only about 5.4% and then people talk about even working 1 hour a week means they are classed as employed so the figures are skewed...... I could never really find proof of that statement..

well last night I managed to find this info... it sums it all up perfectly..

The ABS made changes in 2006 to include working 1 hour a week and did not include anyone that was unable to work... that is a very deceptive change...

Isnt that what the majority of op's posts are about?

Yes.

How about posting factual details on why people should vote for the Liberals. What are their plans to reduce the unemployment rate.

I also thought the OP was of the belief that you shouldn't post the whole article (esp a long one) you are linking to.. a short relevant paragraph and then a link, I think what OP claims to do.

the figure is a 'guesstimate' and incorrect as it is only a sample. samples of that kind can be out to the tune of 3 to 6 per cent. in short, its rubbish.

Sorry.. was at Emergency with my mum...

back now...

LL    .......   It is not a "guesstimate"

it is statistically based and the portion of the population is greater than what is used by the ABS...  statistics are a reliable measure...

Iza .... me having a job and getting assistance is of what relevance to my post???

Donna, I found this last night... I did not go searching.. but I happened across it... I honestly did not think we were is such a bad situation...

Az, I think the 4000 people that found work after being pushed onto Newstart is good.. I would be interested to know how many hours they managed to get and if they are in a financially better position.. If they are working just a few hours a week that is not real work that is going to sustain their independence.

LL... also.. the ABS in the  Howard Era started using this in 2006 as the article states...... does not make it right then or now..

Vamps, have you seen the $2.6 Billion dollar loss the QLD health made with the payroll debacle?? What about the $14 Billion lost to the Tahitian Prince that was nothing but a poor NZ'er? Unfortunately newman needed to make those cuts to fund that loss.

But ultimately is you all think that these figures are ok and not worth talking about ... fine.. I was surprised... I thought others might be too...

i guess it's the likely motive that inspire the responses cat. if it was deceptive of the ABS to compile stats using the method they do its a bi partisan problem. not another angle of attack on the usual suspects.

Can you answer this question?: What  action do you think the Liberal Party will take to improve the current situation - how are they going to create more jobs, how will they lower the unemployment rate (esp in regional areas) also lower youth unemployment rates).

It was 14 million, and that is peanuts in a state budget.

According to this news article was 16.6 million. Whatever, definitely not $14 billion.

I don't think I mentioned Gillard or Labor in my post...

and I also pointed out that the ABS started making changes in 2006...

I think people are sick and tired of the spin on both sides when it comes to figures like this..

If we don't make a stand now and argue for true details then how are we to know when we are making the right decisions?
