We have been told time and time again that we are on a good wicket and that people are complaining for no reason... I know for a fact that people are on struggle street... I could not really understand how our interest rates are low because people are not spending, new housing numbers are incredibly low, businesses are sacking people and/or shutting up shop and the government is saying we have never had it better..
we hear that the unemployment rates are only about 5.4% and then people talk about even working 1 hour a week means they are classed as employed so the figures are skewed...... I could never really find proof of that statement..
well last night I managed to find this info... it sums it all up perfectly..
The ABS made changes in 2006 to include working 1 hour a week and did not include anyone that was unable to work... that is a very deceptive change...

No politician or ABS manager woke up one day and said lets fudge the unemployment statistics, the general public won't know any better.
One of the first statements made to us in an Economics class was that there is and always will be "structured unemployment". In other words, the unemployment rates are manipulated by governments, they don't just happen.

Cat I hope your mum is ok.
Crikey. The post Iza made is quite relevant to the subject, nothing personal about it imo, Cat has told that info on CS numerous times and I believe the reference was to how it has helped her to access the services she has and gain employment......under this Government.

Hope your mum is OK cat.
The unemployment rate in this country is about half what you have found in that article.
But lets say it was on around the 10% mark. That still would make us on par with most comfortably off developed countries.
This country has never had to worry about unemployment.

I agree. An example of someone who was supported by Govt benefits, studied and now has paid employment. That would alter the statistics for the unemployment rate.
Also I don't think in anyway could iza's post in this thread, be compared with that post made 17mths ago. I don't think many, if any, posts here, have ever stooped that low.
The unemployment rate in Australia is calculated by agreed international standards - which are available on the ABS website. I don''t believe any particular Political Party in Govt in Australia, decides to fudge the statistics when they don't look good.

ah.. now I see what she was getting at...
I find it difficult at times...
funny thing is that Gillard's government did not set up this type of assistance... it was set up by the Howard Government... after changes made by this government it was in fact going to be very difficult to get the amount of funding I needed... I had four people fighting for get me that funding and it was very very rare to be approved as it was a lot of money required.
Even more difficult was being refused disability payments thanks to changes Gillard made... apparently being near bedridden for three years and having three dr's and a psych was not enough to back up the fact I could not work due to multiple disabilities...
