We have a right to stop them if they do it in this country. It's child abuse and it' s against the law.
I understand it's a ritual deeply rooted in their culture and religious beliefs. I believe the operations are done by the grandmothers and priestesses, women who endured the same procedure themselves as girls .
The procedure is performed with often rudimentary equipment with only the most basic consideration for cleanliness and hygiene. Many young girls die of infection and trauma, others are condemned to a lifetime of pain, birth complications and urinary tract problems.
We can't stop them in their own country, but when they come here to start a new life they need to live by the laws of their new country.
I'll go one further than enforcing the law. For me it's not about caring for our legal rights, it's about caring for our own humanity as a species. But can you enforce this on people as it goes against their right to religion(let's for argument sake, say it's done for religious belief)
I'm against all stupid ideas whether religious or not.
If you're allow to ban it, you should also be allow to ban male genital mutilation. (BTW note I'm arguing only against it done for religious reasons.

i was wondering, do the cultures who do female circumcision also do male circumcision?
These things are not mutually exclusive.

I didn't watch it, but I've read about. I found plenty of material about it on the net while I was searching for Waris Dirie.
It's pretty graphic and there are diagrams. Also a youtube demonstration. I don't think I'd want to watch it, too ugly.

It is ILLEGAL in Australia - so yes, we can and do enforce it on people regardless of their cultural or religious beliefs and customs. also, from Roserobyn's link it seems clear that we can also enforce it on those living here go overseas to have it done.
The problem arises not so much with punishing the crime once it has been committed as with preventing it from happening in the first place - and as far as I can see the only solution to that is a massive education campaign.

it is pushed for by men.......maybe it is because their"performance"is not good.
so if the female can't orgasm they can't get blamed for it.

You shouldn't challenge someone else's cultural or religious belief. It's offensive to them;\
They don't need to justify why they do it as long as they believe it's right.
what a load of crap.
so you won't be starting any more religious threads then?
challenging is the same as questioning.
i might start my own religion where our belief will be to slice of our buttocks and remove our fingers.
if i get a 100 followers do you think we will make the news? and the reaction?
