Flying Fox/Bat Problem Forest Lake Qld

We have only been in our house for 6mths (relocated from NSW). I have got used to having the bedroom window open at night to let in the cool breezes after the hot days we've been having.

About a month ago I started hearing little squawking noises outside at night, which wasn't too bad. Then about a week ago the squawking got louder & louder. We realised our next door neighbours gum tree was attracting flying foxes of some description. If you have ever had a couple of cats fighting outside your bedroom at night, you'll know what I'm talking about.

Rang the Brissy Council this morning, but of ocurse, they can't (or won't) do anything about them as they are protected. "They'll go when the fruiting season ends" says the lady on the phone. So now, if we want to sleep, we have to shut out window and swelter. Don't get me wrong, I don't blame the flying foxes, just the place where they've decided to have their midnight feasts.

My one concern is the the type of 'bats' they are, (hendra virus), or don't these come into suburbia. Even if I knew what each species looked like, I don't fancy skulking about with a torch late at night.....

I have a similar problem and not far from you. We have never had them before last summer but we do have palms with fruit on.

Someone told me to shine a spotlight into the trees but that didn't work, so now I am going to get someone to actually tie a few solar lights up there, hoping to dissuade them.

You have my profound sympathy.  Where there are two scouts, more will come.

Don't know if you're on tank water.  I hear that their "bombs" might be a problem in that case.  Also, vehicles under their flight path can have their paintwork affected by the acid of the droppings.

Also, if you find poo on your house paintwork, hose it off ASAP, because if you leave it, it is very hard to move and leaves a stain.

We have lots of palms but no fruit as far as I can see. They seem mostly interested in the one large gum tree within cooee.

No tank and no poo in our yard, but the neighbours with the tree have a 6mth old baby, which will soon be out and about.
