I love Smurfs. We used to have a house full of them. With nine children in our home, each and everyone of them owned some Smurfs.

In the 1970s most Petrol Stations gave away Smurfs when buying petrol. We did not have a car, but we needed petrol for the lawnmower, and had no problem for one of the children to offer to get the petrol in a one gallon can.

I have no idea what happened to all the Smurfs. Some of the children took theirs with them when they left home. The rest I think my husband gave away when we downsized to move into the Retirement Village. I wish I still had some of those lovely little characters.

nawwww I love these smurf photos. You people should have put them in the Nostalgia thread. I must have been about 11 when smurfs hit the BP stations. I'd forgotten so many of the characters until now. The caped smurf with the mask was a favourite of mine.

Annie.. I have the one withe the football too.

The one withe the flowers in Erica's post is cute.

We used to get drinking glasses from petrol stations too in the '80s (I still have 6 crystal champagne glasses from petrol station). Ordinary tumblers as well..gave the last couple away when moving house about a year ago.

There a couple hanging around here. I buy bags of small toys from the op shop to give my grandkids something different to play with. ($1.00 a bag) Sort of like a lucky dip because you don't know what you are getting. :). I suspect the smurfs are from maccas.
