For those that complain against social isolation and other measures to contain coronavirus citing relatively low casualty rates , and so seeking reducing or removing mitigation social conditions, Ask yourself this : without the current containment measures how many extra cases would they be ? would our hospital system be overwhelmed and what would be the consequences , and would this result in proportionally many more severe cases, and so many more deaths . Think of those countries who did not respond quick enough. and ask yourself where you would rather live at this time .

Have you heard the government message re a possible "second wave"
"Wash your hands often, maintain social distancing, stay at home as much as possible."
If that's all it takes, why are shutting down our whole economy and throwing at least 50% of our workforce into umemployment?
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
That is NOT all what it takes. That is all that you can do to reduce your chances of getting infected; you can also cross your fingers or pray, or whatever you do. Until we have vaccine.
Do you really think that all around the world governments of all persuasions, from far right to more left leaning ones, have closed down their economies just to upset you that you cannot have your hair done?
It is impossible to maintain "social distance" when everybody travels to work on public transport. If just one infected person gets into the crowded train carriage they may infect half of people there, within days each of these infected people starts infecting others, and as they do 2 trips on peak hour trains daily, the infection spreads exponentially for week or 2 before people start getting ill. It goes something like this; the first person might infect 20 people on the morning train and another 20 on the way home, that is 40 people a day plus some in their work place. In a week they would infect close to 300 people. Each of the infected starts spreading the virus too.
Do you want to see what it looks like in country that does not close down properly? Turn your TV on at 12.30pm for the American news on SBS, they cover lot about Brazil.
By the way the USA has reached death toll of 100 000 in the past 24 hours, and with many states opening up, ignoring social distancing and not wearing masks, you can bet your bottom dollar the rates of infections will start to go sharply up. And in NSW they already closed 2 schools only week after they re-opened.
Without strict measures it is estimated that some 70% of people will get it and 2-3% will die. Have a look at 100 of your family members and close friends, and tell me which 3 you think will be OK if they die alone and in pain. Do not forget it might be you.

Brazil is a total disaster and I believe has overtaken America in deaths and spread. Which is what happens when few/ no precautionary measures are taken (note, Icy.....) like social distancing, etc. We could be the same if these measures had not been taken. Surely even a 6-year old could understand that.

No, Brazil is still not number 1, that honor goes to the USA, and the way Americans are behaving in this moment, nobody can beat them. Although yesterday Brazil reported more death in the last 24 hours; it was a big holiday in the USA and so reporting will be slower.
USA total death 100 000+ ; total infections 1,725,275
Brazil total death 394,507 ; total infections 24,593
This table clicks over at midnight GMT and the numbers are added as they come in, Brazil has already posted some but not many other countries did.

COVID-19 may not disappear. Heck...people are still catching the bubonic plague ( although it's easily treated in these times ).
The main reason it will continue to be a problem is that it is regarded as a Boomer Remover ( a USA term ) by the young and healthy.
The young and healthy ( with no underlying medical conditions ) are simply not worried about it any more than the common flu.
If ever there was a time when politicians 'should' be lying to us it's now. When a young person dies the BS machine should be
be put into overdrive.
"A young man died yesterday after a battle with COVID-19. There were no underlying medical conditions"
The contagion will continue to spread while ever the healthy among us thumb their nose at social distancing.
The young and fit will give it to the old and infirm.
COVID-19 could be sitting on every surface but it can't jump into your mouth.
If we are careful it will simply die out.
When was the last time you washed your hands ?
Did you unconsiously touch your mouth or nose while shopping in the supermarket ?
It's because the Australian ( or any other nation's ) population couldn't be trusted to take care
that enforced separation and consequent economical destruction have ensued.

Ah thanks for the table Kazumi. I got mixes up as apparently Brazil recorded the highest no of deaths in the past 24 hours. Anyway whichever country is the 'winner' I'm so glad I live in Australia.

Keep your eye on the USA row in that table.
I am continually having to correct the number of new cases and deaths.

You've got Brazil back the front Kazumi. It is interesting that the percentage of deaths per number of cases is the same for the US and Brazil.

But yes , i agree , mitigation may have to be vigorously enforced for an extended time , for all age groups , to ensure those that may consider themselves immune comply, and more so as we enter winter time - accountablility is a key.

Yes, i know, noticed too late to fix. Need to watch where I paste.
i wonder if the USA deliberately slowed down their reporting of death over their holiday weekend. Today their death in the past 24 hours jumped to over 1200 again. And the way they carried on over this weekend, in couple of weeks we can expect more cases, and few weeks later watch the death rate increase. 😞
Interestingly, NY has similar overall death and infection rate as Brazil!
Cases total 374 670 and death total 29,553, to Brazil 399,632 and 25,035.
Except NY is now leveling off, while Brazil is surging up and I would not be surprised if Brazil is under reporting more than other countries.
