If we, as a society, accept the concept of freedom of speech, should we also accept the concept that there is a line which must not be crossed, and if so, where do we draw that line?

I think that the line should be when it will do more damage than good. Criticism of actions or ideas are fine, but when it becomes gratuitous attack on somebody or group than it should not be tolerated. That is bullying.

Should there be majority consensus as to what should or should not be permissable under the banner of free speech, and should this be determined by law?
Once you allow freedom of speech to be legislated, you can kiss it goodbye.

100% agree
Freedom of the press and freedom of speech is just that, freedom to say or publish whatever without defaming or libel.
Sadly we have no such freedom in this country after 18c.
Freedom of the press and freedom of speech cannot be legislated, who would have the rights to tell the people what they can and cannot say or read or publish. Politicians of the left?, of the right?
I see a concerted campaign by many to curtail our freedoms and it seems to an odd and incongruous thing.
I have seen the leftist journalists laugh and deride journalists they feel are not of their ilk, demonize them and downright hate them, It's on show on here too.
So, there is no line, no law and certainly no limits that can be imposed on those freedoms.
Once freedom of speech and of the press is taken away we are no better than North Korea.

Sadly there are some that would welcome that and welcome a North Korea style of govt and maybe even some are on this forum. At least one poster on here has in the past admitted to being a devotee and supporter of the North Korea leader and his style of communism

That's a pretty broad brush, there........going by that logic, those who revile communism embrace the antithesis..........National Socialism and Hitler.

Nero, Have you ever thought - really thought - about what totally unrestricted freedom of speech could lead to in practice?
would you beOKwith seeingcartoons like these in your daily papers?
Would you be OK with them if the targets were different?

Irrelevant. It's not about you or what you believe. And I wonder why you think it is?
Freedom to speak our minds is evolution, for some of the population.
Joanie, I like more and more of what you're posting the past few days.
