Freya Newman To Join The Greens

THE student who leaked details of Frances Abbott’s scholarship has been selected for a position with The Greens.

Freya Newman, 21, was successful in securing a paid internship in the office of Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon after the part-time position was advertised in November 2014.

“Following an extensive application process involving over 160 applicants and two rounds of interviews we offered the position to Freya,” Ms Rhiannon said.

“Freya was an outstanding applicant and we are very much looking forward to having her on board.”

Some do, some don't.

Some ask if you have a criminal record, conviction.

Some ask if the lot, arrested, charged, good behavior bond, jail, DUI, the lot.

It just depends on who is asking.

Hence my comment earlier about she might have trouble getting into the US (for one) or other countries

because of how they ask the questions. I know people who can't get into the US for being arrested and

charged.

Some countries won't let you in with a DUI, and a total ban if you have more than one DUI !!!

US Entry

Australian applicants that have been arrested for or charged with a crime, including offences involving the use of a controlled substance, are advised to apply for a visa prior to travel.

Individuals who have been convicted of minor traffic violations (such as speeding), or with drink driving convictions generally do not need to apply for a visa provided they are otherwise eligible to travel on the Visa Waiver Program and receive approval via the Electronic System of Travel Authorization.

I don't know anyone who has applied for entry with any of those circumstances.

According to my limited research, Ms Newman is a full time university student in Creative Writing and Cultural Studies.

She does part time work, formerly as a librarian at Whitehouse, and now for the Greens to supplement her welfare.  Did she try also to supplement her income with writings?

One of my daughters friends did similar studies at Uni, Creative Writing main degree. She gave it up after a year or so, because she realised that she was never going to earn a living from creative writing. She works for a Govt Dept on a high salary. She was of the opinion she could take up he creative writing studies again later if she wanted to.

Need a steady income to pay rent, buy food.

Canada is one where DUI is a problem.

And as above, Freya will always have to apply for a Visa to travel to the US from now on, IF they grant her one.

She didn't just hack anyone's details, a family member of a senior politician ! You can bet her name is in a US database anyway now.

Magistrate thinks different, icy

The magistrate noted the case had attracted a lot of publicity.

"I accept that the media attention has had a significant impact on Ms Newman's wellbeing," she said.

The court heard the case was quite different to a police officer leaking information from the police database, which would be much more serious.

"I accept that Ms Newman was motivated by a sense of injustice rather than a desire for personal notoriety, greed or any desire to embarrass the student," she said.

The magistrate also took into account Ms Newman's immaturity, saying she was 20-years-old at the time of the offence and still living at home with her parents.

Chris Graham - "People who act in the public interest should be afforded public protection."

How was the public interest served by Ms Newman's actions? She exposed a politician's daugther for getting a scholarship worth

$60 000 because of who her father was rather than gaining a scholarship on merit.

Magistrate Teresa O'Sullivan

Ms O'Sullivan said other Whitehouse staff members had briefed Ms Newman in how she could access documents that detailed Ms Abbott's scholarship by using another staff member's log-in.

So she let herself be used by someone who  just happened to know the right person on the staff  of the New Matilda to pass that information on to?

Sorry but that just makes it worse.

I don't think anyone with info they want to share with a newspaper needs to know the right person on the staff on New Matilda.. you would just email them or phone them and see if they are interested in the story.

For personal gain risk jail sentence for a 2 day a week internship (which will be for a limited time) with the Greens.????

There is no evidence that she did that.

Same with any media outlet... one would just approach them and see if they are interested in running your story.

Sometimes they will listen but decide not to publish..

Maybe all fees should be less but up front.

It doesn't really matter what the fees are. Some don't bother to pay them back,

going overseas instead. Although I did find out that on your death, the Gov't hit

the family with a bill !

False information.

Sorry, was it this comment?

Criminal conviction or Not, she will have to declare she was CHARGED and got a GOOD BEHAVIOR BOND

on most VISA Applications if she travels overseas. The US have refused entry visas in the past just because

of the charge.

Correct, she didn't hack anyone's details.

She used another staff member's log-in without permission, that is not hacking.

Ms Newman was charged under s308H(1) of the Crimes Act with obtaining unauthorised access to restricted data held in a computer

Correct, he suggested FA should be offered a scholarship. The college chased her up to come in for a chat.

No other applicants were considered.

Hello, Abbott promises private colleges more funding and students eligible for HELP loans. (which he has had to delay so boo hoo to the Private colleges who sucked up to him over this issue, including the one that gave his daughter a free ride).
