GMO's

  1. Genetically modified foods (or GM foods) arefoods produced from organisms that have had specific changes introduced into their DNA using the methods of genetic engineering. There a two main types of genetically modified crops.

Bt, or bacillus thuringiensis, is a type of soil-dwelling bacteria that produces a protein toxic to many insects. Bt crops are engineered to produce the Bt toxin within the plant itself, acting as a built-in insecticide. Bt toxin kills crop pests by dissolving the insect’s gut lining.
Roundup Ready crops are engineered to be resistant to Roundup, a Monsanto brand of herbicide. The active ingredient in Roundup herbicide is glyphosate, a commonly used weed-killer.

I know very little about this topic. I'm Interested to hear what ya'll know or think about GMO foods.

Hopefully Bandcamp has some knowledge of this subject, but when gmo's were introduced into a commercial honey bee population a couple of years ago 96% of the bees died.  Remeber the honey shortage? That was caused by genetically modified plants.

That is misinformation. Not factually correct.

Re: GMO's

If you google, fluoride, halal certification,or anything else that could be controversial, the websites that come up first are usually propaganda websites.. not websites with proven scientifice studies, factual sites. The first few pages on google can be all propaganda sites for controversial topics.

True. My apologies.  Perhaps what I should've said is, studies like this one;

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/afe.12041/abstract;jsessionid=C8D8812030B899B11A98415616A...

show that the use of neonicotinoid has been proven to cause problems with bee populations.

No one is saying it's just the pesticides thats causing problems.  It's likely a handful of different factors contributing to the population decline of bees.

I'm surprised people are so defensive of gmo's. When not even science can vouch for their safety.  Nature has given us the perfect conditions to thrive, it's purely profit that drives these alterations to nature.

Yeah, but you didn't. Anyone reading your first post about bees (and if it wasn't challenged) could leave this thread, believing what you posted which you claimed as true.

I am defensive about the spread of misinformation, no matter what the subject.

Re: GMO's

We are told to eat more healthily. Mor fresh fruit and vegetables, but eerything is poisoned before we get it in the shop. All fruit and vegetables have between 40 and 60 different insecticides on them, plus the chemicals in fertilizers and the GMO modification. Nothing is safe to eat or drink anymore unless you grow things yourself, but even seedlings from a Nursery or seeds have been chemically tempered with.

Where will it all end?

.. and you better have your soil tested because in very many areas in our cities the soil is contaminated with heavy metals that it is not safe to grow veggies is.  Best is to grow veggies without soil in the straw beds, or get some those raised beds and buy some fresh soil, although I wonder where the "clean" soil comes from.

There a number of studies that have tested the possibility of gmo's being a contributing factor to the decline in bee populations globally.  And like the one I quoted have discovered some serious problems with neonicotinoid.  Which is widely sprayed on seeds.

Thank you for highlighting that. As I have said before the last thing I want to do is spread misinformation, so I appreciate you pulling me up on that for the benefit of those reading.

I'll be sure to choose my words a little more wisely in the future 🙂

Re: GMO's

I know I shouldn't ask this but...........with all this poison we're putting in our food, why is the average lifespan growing longer?

Because before antibiotics people died from infections that we do not have to worry about, and because children were dying from preventable diseases.  Humans still have the same capacity for their life span, it just that more of us are making it to the max.

However on the other hand the pollution and poisons in our environment are causing lot more allergies, and fertility problems.  Between 1989 and 2005, average sperm counts fell by a third in the study of 26,000 men, increasing their risk of infertility. The amount of healthy sperm was also reduced, by a similar proportion.

That is a good question and point.  In my opinion it's because we have so many ways to keep sick people alive these days.  Not saying that everyone is sick till they're 70 but science has been able to prolong our lives with any number of medical interventions, pills for blood pressure, surgical procedures etc.

Take my 14 year old german shepherd for example.  A couple of years ago I had some massive cancerous growths cut out of him, he will be 15 in Dec, thats quite amazing for a german shepherd. I'm positive he'd be gone had I left those growths alone.  BUT now that he is blind, deaf, pretty much senile, he poops in his bed and stuff (not all the time, but sometimes he just cant get up in time) has nerve dysfunction in his back legs, so he can still get around but for how much longer I dont know. In the end I'm going to have to get him put down, which I'm going to hate, but you have to think of his quality of life.

So I guess my point is, people may live a lot longer but what sort of quality of life do they have?
