Have just been listening to an interview on ABC 24 and she called Juliar Gillard an organ grinders monkey the way she dressed. Here was this wrinkled stick with a head of hair that looked like she had put her hand in the power socket critisizing how another person looked. I personally have never admired this loud, overbearing feminist.

Please; read what Germain said in the context, and keep in the mind that she is a professor emeritus, 25 years older than Julia and somebody to whom many woman look up to, somebody who made many woman realise that they can stand on their 2 own feet and aspire to the highest office in the land. Germain did not attack her, she gave advice, and the tone of her voice was definitely NOT nasty. Of-course, the media ran with that one line. But the whole statement was acknowledgement of how difficult Julia's position was. Please, read it:
GERMAINE GREER: Look, it's important to realise that Julia Gillard is part of a coalition. What that means is that she has to negotiate every single policy position. What that means is camel trading on the floor. It happens to be what she's good at. You can say, 'We want to know what she really, really believes.' In fact, it's irrelevant because whatever she really, really believes is not what's going to happen. I agree with you that she was very badly directed by Arbib and Albanese. They were worried about her dry, matter of fact, unglamorous style that she showed us when Rudd was away at the Bali conference, which was a complete bust. And she was there 5:00 in the morning on the breakfast television, the voice of common sense. And we thought, 'We really like her.' She's not in love with the sound of her own voice, which clearly Rudd was. She never said 20 words when 5 words would do. There are lots of good things about her. She's an administrator, she gets things done, she understands that she has to constantly get people on side, give people jobs to do, make sure that they do them. It's unglamorous, it's not star material but it's what she's been doing. What I want her to do is get rid of those bloody jackets!
TONY JONES: She should go to him for political advice and you for fashion advice?
GERMAINE GREER: No, it's not even fashion. They don't fit. Every time she turns around, you've got that strange horizontal crease which means they're cut too narrow in the hips. You've got a big **bleep**, Julia, just get on with it.

Early on her life, Greer had an abortion, and in her words, she was butchered by the Australian doctor. She tried unsuccessfully to have a child later with her partner. Although it is irrelevant, she had a loving relationship (with a man) when in her sixties, as was evident in an interview at that time. This info is for those who think she wanted to be a man.

It's a pity none of you were around when Germaine really made a difference to women's rights.
She was outrageous and that is what was so necessary to gain the ground she did for us all - yes even you today.
She is an extremely clever woman, and unless you understand where she is coming from you will interpret her interview the wrong way.
She's 75, if you reach 75 (and some of you won't) then you too will have aged and not be the people you are today.

how do you know when posters were around ?
and as far as women's rights ..is that about recognising ALL women regardless of ..age,race/culture,religion ?
and I think the other posters comment could possibly have been hinting at the fact that some people reading your post. may know that they may not make it to 75 ? Them not getting to 75 wouldn't make them inferior .Though the suggestion could make them feel very sad imo

As has been stated before, she was making "rude comments" about the Labor machine, not the woman.

Yep, this is what she said:
“Every time she turns around you’ve got that strange horizontal crease (pause for uproarious laughter from the Q and A panel) which means they’re cut too narrow in the hips.
“You’ve got a big **bleep** Julia. Just get on with it.”
"As has been stated before, she was making "rude comments" about the Labor machine, not the woman."
The above exchange shows clearly that the rude comment was made abut the woman and not the Labor machine.
Very catty for a woman who sees herself as liberated from the fashion and body image issues the ordinary garden variety type woman may have.
Surely Ms Gillard is entitled to wear her short little jackets if she so desires without that sort of criticism from a fellow feminist, no less.

I do not remember you taking offence at all the horrid insults that were heaped on JG over the years. Julia was for ever attacked by the gutter press; the way she walked, her hair, her relationship, her every move was ridiculed, interestingly you harp on the one line Germaine said half jokingly, and giving very valid point. Those jackets did nothing for JG, and i doubt she she took offence; but she took the advice. It is unfortunate, but how person dress does make difference. It should not, we should judge the person on who they are and what they stand for, not by colour of their hair, their voice, the shape of their body, if they are married, or whatever personal, and totally irrelevant criteria.
And here, we have topic about woman who changed our lives, author of number of books, professor emeritus, and more posts are here about the one line than anything else. Says a lot, doesn't it.

Was Julia Gillard selecting her own outfits while PM or was someone else doing it for her ?
....and as Germaine pointed out I think ...is she wearing them now ?

I dont think Julia had a choice when she was P/minister.
Now she wears what she wants and looks so much better.

if she had a stylist selecting them...I'd say Germaine thinks they weren't worth OUR money

So go tell that to your hero, Ms Greer, who chose to make a rude comment about Ms Gillard's fashion sense AND her body shape in the same sentence, in a very rude manner, ON PUBLIC TELEVISION!
Your'e right, I didn't like the jackets either, and said so on this very forum, but I've never made rude comments about Ms Gillard's appearance, rear end or otherwise.
You'll notice neither have I Ms Greer's. Or her acheivements.
