Giant hole appears at 'world's end'
A mysterious giant hole spotted in northern Siberia has sparked an urgent expedition.
Aerial images posted on YouTube indicate a hole up to 80m wide in Yamal, a peninsula jutting into Arctic waters whose name translates as "the end of the world".
The hole was discovered by a helicopter crew working for an oil company in the gas-rich region, The Siberian Times reports.
A scientific expedition organised by the Yamal authorities will leave tomorrow to investigate. The team includes experts from Russia's Centre for the Study of the Arctic, the Cryosphere Institute of the Academy of Sciences and Russia's Emergencies Ministry.
The cause of the hole's sudden appearance is not yet known.
Experts said that the darkening around the inner rim of the crater indicated "severe burning" that scorched its edges.
A spokesman for the Emergencies Ministry's Yamal branch has ruled out a meteorite strike and web speculation about the crater indicating "the arrival of a UFO craft" has likewise been dismissed.
An expert from the Sub-Arctic Scientific Research Centre said global warming could be the culprit, releasing gases under the surface that mixed with water and salt and then exploded like a champagne cork.
The expedition team will take soil, air and water samples for analysis.
Geez there's a lot of sinkholes suddenly appearing aroung the world isn't there?

It's a new rubbish dump site sent by GOD.
We should all take heed and immediately implement procedures to transport all our worldly rubbish to this location.
Automatically recycling trash into the furnace of the Earth.
Lets hope another explosion doesn't explode it all back over us....

Update:
Russian scientists venture into mysterious Siberian hole
Russian teams have arrived at the site of a mysterious giant hole in remote Siberia, even going inside the crater to investigate.
It's still not known what has caused the phenomenon, its appearance in the Yamal Peninsula โ which translates to 'end of the world' โ continuing to confound scientists.
The hole which sits around 2900km east of Moscow, reportedly measures 80m wide, but it's not yet clear how deep it is.
New footage shows the scientific expedition underway, with teams having the first close-up look inside the crater.
Russian scientists, along with members of the country's Emergency Ministry are currently gathering soil and water samples for testing.
A meteorite has been the most popular theory for the cause of the Siberian hole, but the Emergency Ministry has reportedly told Russia Today that isn't the case.
Instead it's believed an explosion below the ground is the most probable explanation.
The area holds some of Russia's largest gas reserves with the hole appearing about 37km from the biggest gas field, Bovanenkovo.
Although the crater has only just recently been discovered, researchers say it's likely to be several years old, as indicated by the permafrost surrounding it.
It's an indication of how remote the area is if it blew some time ago and nobody realised it. Only just found it by accident. Kind of creepy.
