The main problem I see with it is if they were intending to profile for particular nationalities.
Illegal immigrants don't just get here by boat.

I agree with you that it's a worry. Press releases should be simply stated and unambiguous. As they are what the public has to go by. I hope that those on duty during these actions are clear about what they are meant to be doing.

prior to this announcement there has been the requirement to carry ID for various reasons. Entry to bars, purchase of alcohol, if one is asked to produce it by the police or a transport official.
Part of this initiative is to check on visas. The easiest way to prove one's legality on that point, is to carry an Australian passport, surely?
checks may not be random, but with (as per your information) them to be (perhaps) conducted at two points in the CBD.
considering everywhere I can go in the course of a weekend, I will be carrying ID.
are you kidding?
for one I dont have a passport and secondly I kniow of no such law that requires me to carry ID
The only law I am aware of ids that you must give your full name if asked.

they may chose to do so but there is no legal requirement to do so, I can understand an 18 yo having ID so they are not refused alcohol

no but most ppl have it on them anyway. I have by DL in my purse, so wherever I go so does it.
Anyway, the PM has categorically stated random checks are out of the question, so the point is moot.
