Bob I don't believe God 'answers' prayers in the way we think He does. But I do believe some prayers are answered and I believe in miracles.
I think answered prayers/miracles will be found to have a scientific/quantum physics basis ... something to do with the Observer and latent potential, our minds, our expectations and karma.
Your 2nd points is possible. I have no way of proving it wrong. I can admitt there're plenty of things we don't know. I just have an issue when religious people claim they DO know.
THe success of prayer is statically insignificant. Whether you pray or not seem to produce the same result. They have done studies on it. THe result is similar regardless if yo're an atheist or theist.
Infact it's been found those patients who knew they were being prayed for tend to have a worser result than knowing they weren't being prayed for.

THere ARE beliefs out there that are dangerous. If you have a divine book that supports genocide and threatening non believers, or affecting the education of kids, would that not bother you? You just have to think how someone perfectly moral and kind and sane would strap a bomb to their body and blow themselves up with people around him then you would realise how certain beliefs are dangerous.
Have to agree with that. That's why I've always said I will challenge any belief that spreads hatred and violence.

Not sure where these stats are Bob so I can't comment.
I'm trying to re-read the Buddhist concept of Ku, Ke and Chu (very quantum physics) to try to explain it here re: miracles and prayer but I studied it 10 years ago and it still does my head in. It's a little easier to understand now than it was 10 years ago but to try and explain it in my own words? No chance :^O Will need another 10 years.

Just wanting to point out we are having a discussion about religion and I'm enjoying it. And no one has been tempted to quote scripture to prove a point. 🙂
Well it's not possible to prove Jesus' teaching without appealing to scripture.
BTW there're numerous things allegedly said or done by Jesus that will shock you. Well, can't really do it without quoting scripture. But Jesus' love is conditional as GOdsman said earlier.

But scripture doesn't prove anything. The Bible contradicts itself all the time. It says things like you should marry your brothers widow/if you marry your brother's widow you'll be childless.
I'd like to know what Jesus did/said that would shock me. I know he threw a fit when he discovered money lenders in the temple. Didn't he overturn their tables in anger? That doesn't shock me. I would say "way to go Jesus" and be comforted in the fact he was human like us.

Well if you don't like scripture, I suspect you don't want to read scientific papers either.
It's not hard to work out whether prayers works or not by looking at the world around you. BTW that's different to answering whether prayer helps the person praying.

Yes he's human but perfect. A contradiction in itself.
I'll leave scripture out of your thread. But it's interesting what most Christians didn't know about Jesus will shock them.

I have nothing against scientific papers unless they contain big words that I can't understand.

helps us to see that, despite how we may see them, things--people, situations, relationships, our own lives--are not fixed, but dynamic, constantly changing and evolving. They are filled with latent potential which can become manifest at any time."
You can see how Buddhism is so close to quantum physics it's incredible. I have a book that quotes famous scientists and quantum physicists and next to these quotes are quotes from Buddhism that say the same thing, just in Buddhist speak.
True, we don't fully understand the power of human mind. Maybe it will be possible to travel in time sooner rather than later. Do you think its possible at all? We could trace the origins of the Shourd of Turin.
I have witnessed two (what I consider) miracles. Long story short; evidence of cancer. After what is referred to as 'intercessory prayer', there is no evidence of cancer ever being present. Loss of eyesight - same scenario. There was no meditation involved by the 'sufferer'. Was it a coincidence? Maybe but there is still no medical explanation. It was a case of one day its there, the next its gone. Maybe there is a scientific explanation and if so, I hope its not too long before it can be understood.

I have actually :^O I typed a response to your question by quoting what Jesus said about hell but did not post it. (it wasn't to prove a point though)
