they are doggles to protect from the sun and sandstorms....

Yes it must be bad for the dog's eye's, I wonder they keep them on!

Maybe that is what happened with the Air Force dogs, but not the Army dogs.

My daughter married an Army dog handler in 1998 and he had his very elderly German Shepherd at home with him back then.  We saw a lot of the dog and there was no way you would guess that she was a highly trained bomb detector dog. 

 

My daughter was a Vet nurse and had the unenviable task of making the decision that the dog was sufferig too badly from arthritis and her time had come....her husband just could not do it.  The only stipulation was that the dog had to be buried in the doggie cemetary on the base.
