Good for JOE

For those not familiar with Joe Arpio, he is the County Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona. He keeps getting re-elected over and over again.

These are some o...f the reasons why:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio created the "tent city jail" to save Arizona from spending tens of millions of dollars on another expensive prison complex.Inmates sleep in tents!

He has jail meals down to 20 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He banned smoking and pornographic magazines in the jails, and took away their weightlifting equipment and cut off all but "G" movies. He says: "They're in jail to pay a debt to society not to build muscles so they can assault innocent people when they leave."

He started chain gangs to use the inmates to do free work on county and city projects and save taxpayer's money. Men work in Pink "Clean and Sober" Shirts. Their underwear is also Pink!

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only allows the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel, he replied: "So these morons will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs."

He cut off coffee because it has zero nutritional value and is therefore a waste of taxpayer money. When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."

He also bought the Newt Gingrich lecture series on US history that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series that actually tells the truth for a change would be welcome and that it might even explain why 95% of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record for June 2nd 2009), the Associated Press reported: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed wire surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On the Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing pink boxer shorts were overheard chatting in the tents, where temperatures reached 128 degrees."This is hell. It feels like we live in a furnace," said Ernesto Gonzales, an inmate for 2 years with 10 more to go. "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, who makes his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. "Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for parole, only to go out and commit more crimes so they can come back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things many taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves."

The same day he told all the inmates who were complaining of the heat in the tents: "It's between 120 to 130 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents there too, and they have to walk all day in that sun, wearing full battle gear and getting shot at, and THEY have not committed any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!"

Sheriff Joe was just re-elected for the fourteenth time as Sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona.

In the wake of the Sandy Hook school shooting, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is getting ready to deploy an armed posse to protect children in Phoenix, Arizona area schools.

Eric Bolling asked Sheriff Arpaio on โ€˜Your Worldโ€™ today how the armed posse would be implemented.

Arpaio responded that it would work the same way itโ€™s been working for 20 years and that heโ€™s used the posse to go after illegal immigrants and prostitutes.

โ€œI think itโ€™s a good program and weโ€™re going to do it. I donโ€™t just talk about it like politicians after this massacre.

Weโ€™re going to do it within a week,โ€ he said.

Arpaio further described the initiative saying the posse would patrol the perimeter of the schools and take any action necessary in case there is suspicious activity.

โ€œI want everybody to know that we are out there,โ€ he said.

His deputies failed to investigate or conducted only the sketchiest of inquiries into hundreds of sex crimes between 2005 and 2007, investigations by Arizona law enforcement agencies have shown.

Many of those cases involved molested children.

Many of the cases originated in El Mirage, a working-class suburb of Phoenix, where the Police Department was disbanded in 2005 and the Sheriffโ€™s Department was called in to provide policing.

But when the Police Department was reformed in 2007, officials discovered that dozens of sensitive cases, many filed by illegal immigrants, had not been adequately investigated or investigated at all.

A number of Democratic lawmakers, longtime critics of the sheriff, called on him this week to step down, a suggestion that Sheriff Arpaio dismissed.

โ€œIโ€™m not going to let elected officials with their own agenda that have a โ€˜Dโ€™ next to their name try to get some media attention using my name to get me to resign,โ€ Sheriff Arpaio said.

โ€œVictims of abuse not only deserve the respect of law enforcement, but their rights must also be protected throughout the criminal justice process,โ€ the senators said.

On Thursday night, anti-Arpaio activists converged on the Town Hall in Guadalupe, a predominantly Latino neighborhood where sheriffโ€™s deputies conducted a high-profile raid in 2008.

Randy Parraz, who is leading an effort to oust the sheriff, urged the Town Council to adopt a resolution calling for Mr. Arpaioโ€™s resignation.

But town officials put off the matter and instead allowed residents to vent.

One young woman said her cousin has tried with no success to get deputies to investigate the molestation of her three daughters.

โ€œThe person who did it is still out there,โ€ she said. โ€œWe see him all the time.โ€

Subsequent efforts to investigate the cases have proven fruitless as many of the victims have moved, or no longer wish to cooperate with the authorities.

The criticism of Sheriff Arpaio, who is 79, has bolstered the fortunes of Lt. Mike Stauffer of the Scottsdale police, who has started a campaign to unseat the well-financed Sheriff Arpaio next year.

โ€œThis man who calls himself a sheriff doesnโ€™t display the least bit of concern about victims,โ€

Lieutenant Stauffer said.

they're responsible for such important law enforcement tasks as:
...observ[ing] partly open garage doors...placing of a uniformed Posse and either a patrol car or an unmarked patrol van by the home during a funeral...

Once again, the Posse is doing holiday season Sun City mall patrol.

We are also patrolling the Arrowhead Mall on Friday nights. You will now find us at most Sun City Shopping Centers. Additional patrol cars and Posse Personnel will be on duty.

We will be looking for bad guys and presenting a visual presence to make your holiday shopping safer.

Now, they'll be at your child's school, ready to draw down on any perp who walks through the door.

Re: Good for JOE

There is nothing more terrifying than someone in power who is ideologically motivated, particularly when the ideology involves punishment. It seems very much like he is imposing conditions based on nothing more than personal bias, and that is the scariest part of all. What is the limit of this guy's power? Where does it end? Can he impose anything, willy nilly?

Is there any evidence that harsher punishments in his jails has resulted in a decrease in crime?

This Joe reminds me of the warden The Shawshank Redemption, and the warden in The Last Castle(starring Robert Redford), but an order of magnitude worse.

Re: Good for JOE

he should be in the prison not running it.  his ways are inhumane and disgusting and do not involve rehabilitation in any way.  he feeds the prisioners off food and keeps them in completely unacceptable conditions.  he also locks people up for the most ridiculous "crimes" for ridiculous periods of time.  he is a disgrace to the human race.

Such is life.
