THE federal government has pledged $115 million to continue homelessness funding for another year.
The boost to the National Partnership Agreement on Homelessness will mean around 180 homelessness services across the nation will be able to continue to provide services until the 2014-15 financial year.
The decision gives certainty to the social services sector which had lobbied the government because funding was due to lapse on June 30.
It also comes a month earlier than Prime Minster Tony Abbott's promise that funding certainty would be provided on budget night.
Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews on Sunday said the government will consider long-term arrangements on housing policy over the next year with talks with the sector and the states and territories.
"On any given night, more than 105,000 Australians are homeless, so it's important for the government to provide assurance to the services supporting these people," Mr Andrews said in a statement.
If the state and territory governments add their equal share of $115 million to the agreement, there will be $230 million for homelessness services in Australia for the next financial year, Mr Andrews said.
Homelessness Australia and Mission Australia welcomed the announcement as a first step in a long-term plan.
It was a "huge relief" that provided certainty for the delivery of vital social services, they said.

Again. I think you will find that these are not HER values she was alluding too.
I "speak for her" only to point out that I 'got' the point she was making even though it appears to have been 'lost' on some. Thought it worth bringing up before the tirade of anti-homelessness posts started.

Lol. It always makes me laugh when people say "What do you do for the homeless/refugees/generally disadvantaged..." as if this is some kind of test that proves a person is allowed to have an opinion on a subject.
Actually I have a mentally ill brother in law who is homeless and who we care for on a regular basis. I also volunteer once a month for a homeless shelter in Surry Hills. It's not exciting work (I give educational talks to anyone that is interested) but I feel I do my bit.
You?

Huh? Donna is clearly agreeing with you. So am I.
HE SHOULD NEVER HAVE HANDED OVER OUR WEALTHY WHITE TAX DOLLARS TO WELFARE BLUDGERS, WHY OH WHY DID HE CAVE IN?? Gina could have used that money so much more wisely, for example she most probably could have shipped off the support services to Nauru and paid $2 per hour. The lazy homeless could easily have fitted in the concentration camp, lying empty after everyone was automatically assessed as non-white non-refugees and shipped back home for punishment.
WHY, TONY, WHYYYY!
Another rather unkind comment.
It's so nice to have beliefs and opinions in common with one's new besties, is it not?

i applaude you and you put your (for a lack of a better term) mouth where your heart is and at least give some back.. well done and that is a what i was saying,,,,,,,,,, now if every bleeding heart did what you do a huge part of the problem would be solved,,,, sadly most bleeding heart types prefer to talk about the problems and go tsk tsk rather than doing anythging real about it as it would interfear with their comfortable lifestyle

Now that the moats, er, boats have been stopped and those pesky queue jumpers will either die, be sent back or granted refugee status eventually, perhaps the unsightly homeless could be sent to Manus Island or Nauru.
