Hello! - late as it is...
Todays birthdays...
In 1902 the great modernist architect Pablo Antonio was born in Manila, Philippines. The remarkable life of Antonio is one of determination triumphing over adverse circumstances. He was orphaned at an early age, and so to put himself through high school, began working at the Bureau of Public Works. Dropping out of college for the opportunity to work on the construction of the former Legislative Building (now the National Museum), his brilliance was noted by Engineer Ramon Arevalo who paid for him to study architecture at the University of London. Having worked while studying for many years, Antonio was so adept at the practicalities of construction that he completed the five year course in just three. Some beautiful buildings of his can be seen in Manila.
In 1882, Virginia Woolf was born...enough said..but please dont mention N.Kidman..just. dont.
Another incredible singer- Etta James, born in 1938..so influential..she sings like a..well, no one touches Etta..Here are 2(yes, 2!!) great standards, often copied, see what you think..'At last' and 'Its a mans, mans world'
Lastly, in 1981, another talented singer was born: Alicia Augello Cook known as Alicia Keys..heres a vid of 'If I aint got you'..stripped back of all the over production of some of her live performances..see what you think..
Enjoy your night

Hello! Busy all day..still, its good to share some birthdays..
Lets start in 1892, with an Aviatrix. The first African American woman to hold a pilots licence was born. Elizabeth 'Bessie' Coleman was also the first Native American woman to hold a pilots licence and the first person of African American and Native American descent to hold an International pilots licence. Thats a lot of firsts- in an age where gender and racial discrimination was common. What a pioneer!
Stephane Grappelli was born in Paris on this day in 1908. He founded an all-string jazz band with guitarist Django Reinhardt known as 'Quintet du Hot Club de France'..Heres a great clip of 'Minor Swing'..enjoy it!
Actor, film director, entrepreneur, professional racing driver, environmentalist, philanthropist, superstar..Who am I? Paul Newman, born 1925..Most famous blue eyes in the business..Made millions- over 300 million $, gave it all to charity..
In 1945 the brilliantly talented English cellist Jacqueline du Pre was born, sadly, she died in 1987 after suffering from MS. Check thislive clip accompanied on piano by her mother, Iris, she plays Mendelssohns 'Song without words op. 109' Serious, but so sweet, beautiful..
In 1953 the country, folk, blues singer/ songwriter Lucinda Williams was born..first song I ever heard was 'I just wanted to see you so bad'..heres a live clip from 1989..she was nominated by Time magazine as Americas best songwriter in 2002.
