As the terror alert has gone up a seperat thread is in order.

Tony Abbott announces Australian terror threat raised from ‘medium’ to ‘high’

Australia's terror threat level has been raised from medium to high, meaning a terror attack on home soil is now officially considered "likely".

The nation's outgoing spy chief ASIO Director General David Irvine says an attack could manifest itself in a "Bali-style attack, although Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Friday that the agencies had not detected any "particular plots".

Mr Abbott expressed confidence that the authorities are "smarter than terrorists and would be terrorists," and would remain "one step ahead" of their malice.

Mr Abbott made the much anticipated announcement at a media conference with the Attorney-General George Brandis and Mr Irvine four days after the ASIO chief flagged the escalation.

Mr Abbott stressed that raising the terror threat level did not mean a terror attack was "imminent" but said it meant there are people in Australia with the "intent and capability" to carry out at terror attack.

The PM and AFP Commissioner ahead of Friday's announcement in Melbourne.

He said it would "not make any difference to daily life" for the vast majority of Australians but it would mean "more security" at airports, ports, military bases, public buildings and large public events, including the upcoming AFL Grand Finals. But he said football fans should not be deterred from attending the games

Normal life in Australia can and must go on," he said. "We want people to go about their normal lives and we certainly want to people to enjoy the football if their teams are lucky enough to be in the grand final," he said.

Acting Australian Federal Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin said sports fans "fortunate enough" to have tickets to the grand final should still attend as police have "well worked" plans for securing major matches.

"You may expect to see heightened police presence but it won't be intrusive, I'm sure," he said.

Mr Abbott also said a "modest information campaign" would begin within weeks.

Mr Irvine said the events in the Middle East over recent months had activated people at home who support the extremism propagated by ISIL militants in Iraq and Syria.

He said 60 to 70 Australians were among the 10,000 foreign fighters fighting alongside the terrorists in Iraq and Syria and some had returned home.

"We have no intention of sending troops." Tony Abbott 1st September 2014

is it usual practice to announce something as important as sending our troops to war on a Sunday afternoon without a cabinet meeting first?

For what?

The first specific report in the Telegraph appeared an hour ago. That was after I searched.

you said you couldn't find any information

i assumed you meant on various news sites tv etc

as i said it was on the news  this morning - an early morning  news report on tv

and i provided a link to just one of many news reports (from early this morning)

Thanks for the link but it's no use even trying to put that report across as they only read what they want to.

I do believe in the US airstrikes and I had no objection to the RAAF ferrying arms and ammunition, because I think we owe that much to the Iraqi peopleafter creating the vacuum that these momsters have moved into. but I cannot see anything good coming out of sending in combat troops.

as per abc report this afternoon:

Mr Abbott said Australia was "not deploying combat troops but contributing to international efforts to prevent the humanitarian crisis from deepening".

Sydney in the firing line of Islamic State fanatics: Police escalate search for five rocket launchers

POLICE have significantly escalated their search for five rocket launchers believed to be buried in Sydney bushland by a terror cell linked to Islamic State savages Khaled Sharrouf and Mohamed Elomar.

NSW and federal police have ramped up their search for the lethal rocket launchers, following the government’s decision to raise the national terror alert level to “high” and ahead of the November G20 meeting in Brisbane

The Daily Telegraph can also reveal members of the Pendennis Nine terror cell — who planned to attack high-profile Sydney targets and are serving long jail terms — have refused to tell police where the rocket launchers are hidden.

A NSW Police spokesman said officers were “actively” searching for the five rocket launchers, which were among 10 stolen by former Army captain Shane Della-Vedova from a military facility in Orchard Hills in 2002.

One was recovered, and four are believed to have been sold on the black market, possibly to overseas buyers.

“NSW Police continue to actively investigate these missing weapons,” the spokesman said yesterday.

“We will continue to explore a range of avenues to recover them.”

More than 20 Muslims are believed to have returned from fighting for jihadists in Syria and Iraq. ASIO fears some will try “lone wolf” operations that are hard to pick up in advance.

Today:

Four men armed with machetes assaulted a security guard at the elite Scots College in Bellevue Hill in an attempt to reach weaponry stored on the school grounds, police say.

The men confronted the guard on the school perimeter about 1am on Friday but failed to gain access to any building. It is understood the men demanded entry to an area where guns were stored but were refused by the guard.

The men fled in a car that was possibly driven by a woman, police said. The guard was not injured…

The men armed with machetes were described to police as being of Middle Eastern appearance and wearing jumpers and pants.

Lol at the connection.

So 4 mean and war ready Middle Eastern men who have come back from some serious fighting in Syria (and I imagine would be fairly blase about killing) can't manage to get into a school because a guard told them to go away?

Sure I can see the link...Not!
