As the terror alert has gone up a seperat thread is in order.
Tony Abbott announces Australian terror threat raised from ‘medium’ to ‘high’
Australia's terror threat level has been raised from medium to high, meaning a terror attack on home soil is now officially considered "likely".
The nation's outgoing spy chief ASIO Director General David Irvine says an attack could manifest itself in a "Bali-style attack, although Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Friday that the agencies had not detected any "particular plots".
Mr Abbott expressed confidence that the authorities are "smarter than terrorists and would be terrorists," and would remain "one step ahead" of their malice.
Mr Abbott made the much anticipated announcement at a media conference with the Attorney-General George Brandis and Mr Irvine four days after the ASIO chief flagged the escalation.
Mr Abbott stressed that raising the terror threat level did not mean a terror attack was "imminent" but said it meant there are people in Australia with the "intent and capability" to carry out at terror attack.
He said it would "not make any difference to daily life" for the vast majority of Australians but it would mean "more security" at airports, ports, military bases, public buildings and large public events, including the upcoming AFL Grand Finals. But he said football fans should not be deterred from attending the games
Normal life in Australia can and must go on," he said. "We want people to go about their normal lives and we certainly want to people to enjoy the football if their teams are lucky enough to be in the grand final," he said.
Acting Australian Federal Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin said sports fans "fortunate enough" to have tickets to the grand final should still attend as police have "well worked" plans for securing major matches.

"You may expect to see heightened police presence but it won't be intrusive, I'm sure," he said.
Mr Abbott also said a "modest information campaign" would begin within weeks.
Mr Irvine said the events in the Middle East over recent months had activated people at home who support the extremism propagated by ISIL militants in Iraq and Syria.
He said 60 to 70 Australians were among the 10,000 foreign fighters fighting alongside the terrorists in Iraq and Syria and some had returned home.

The bad guys are here, so stop pretending they’re not
EVERY day another Labor or Greens MP comes out with another kooky pronouncement downplaying the barbarity of Islamic State and pretending that if we’re all just nice to each other, and stop worshipping God, then terrorism will disappear.
If it’s not Labor’s federal member for Perth Alannah MacTiernan equating Tony Abbott to jihadists, it’s Greens Senator Peter Whish- Wilson saying we shouldn’t use the world “terrorist”.
They say the Abbott government is just beating up the terror threat to distract attention from its unpopular budget.
This is not some fringe attitude but a widespread view across the soft left, who are so eaten up with hatred for Tony Abbott they have lost the power of rational thought.
When the prime minister announced on the weekend that 600 ADF personnel, army special forces advisers and RAAF combat aircraft would be deployed to the United Arab Emirates to help stop Islamic State terrorists from beheading, crucifying and raping innocent civilians in Iraq, what was the headline on The Sydney Morning Herald website? “Fools rush in”.
You have to wonder what it will take for these people to comprehend the threat of Muslim extremism and the need to act. Instead, they ramp up their criticism of Jews and Christians as if that will even the score
.
Hence we see anti-semitic attacks are on the rise, with not a spark of sympathy from the left.
There was the frightening incident on an eastern suburbs school bus last month in which youths shouted “Kill the Jews” and “Heil Hitler”, followed by anti-semitic flyers sent to Jewish homes in Bondi.
A Jewish school in Bondi has even had to install a bombproof wall and windows after death threats.
You don’t need to look far to see the bad guys are on the march and in our patch. How dangerous and irresponsible to pretend otherwise.

“We are satisfied that the continued registration of Bisotel Rieh, an independent remittance provider, may involve a significant financing terrorism risk,’’ he said.
“We have invited Bisotel Rieh to provide submissions as to why we should not proceed to cancel the registration.’’
Last week AUSTRAC released a report highlighting the risk Australia was at to financing terror groups.
Bisotel Rieh have 48 hours to provide evidence why their licence should not be suspended for a further 48 days.
