I have posted a link to an interesting article by Larry Pickering on Tim Carmody's selection as Chief Justice of the QLD Supreme Court: Pickering Post article
Essentially, Pickering asserts that the LNP government was manipulated into appointing Carmody to the position of Chief Justice through the Machiavellian machinations of a barrister by the name of Ryan Haddrick. The article argues Premier Campbell Newman chose Carmody against the advice of several of his cabinet colleagues (including Attorney General Jarrod Bleijie) largely due to the criticisms of Tony Fitzgerald and Walter Sofronoff. Indeed, Pickering asserts that Newman had decided against appointing Carmody until the public statements of Fitzgerald and Sofronoff, these public statements being in response to a false newspaper story (planted by Haddrick) that Carmody was about to be appointed to the Chief Justice position.
The story seems a little implausible. I don't know where Pickering got the information for this story and, without knowing his sources I cannot say that I categorically believe the story to be true. However, I believe that Larry Pickering believes the story to be true (and I believe that Pickering is an honourable man).
If the story is true it raises some interesting questions about how the Newman LNP government does business. I wish someone would ask these questions.

It's slightly less amusing for those of us living in Brisbane however. The general consensus up here is that the Newman govt is as corrupt as the day is long, and Newman's popularity rating has plummeted as a result. I suspect that he would have been gone long before now had the opposition not been almost as bad.
Not being a QLDer but do read QLD news I can't see them winning the next state election - not that the NSW lot are much better but they will be saying adieu next state election as well. No reading pickering for me.
