A ban on halal and kosher slaughter without prior stunning of animals has come into effect in Denmark. A similar ban is already in force in Sweden and Norway, as well as other European nations. This decision follows previous debates in Denmark about halal slaughter and the marking of halal slaughtered meat, and has stirred deep controversy among Muslim and Jewish groups both within the country and beyond.

The ban was called anti-Semitic by Israel’s deputy minister of religious services; similarly, the Danish non-profit group Danish Halal decried the ban as a clear infringement of religious freedom. The issue is also expected to put severe strain on bilateral trade with countries such as Saudi Arabia.

Mr Grizz  mentioned that 99.999999% of abbotoirs here stun aniumals before slaughter, so it is at least not a common practise here

More of a problem is that we send large numbers of live animals overseas to be slaughtered without stunning ( even the transportation) is cruel)

unfortunately it is fully supported & encouraged by our govts.

A ban on halal slaughter without prior stunning would get my vote, otherwise I have no problems with it. 

One thing I would like to know - and perhaps Mr Grizz knows a bit about it - is how are chickens killed commercially? I remember, years ago watching women dispatching chickens at  the salesyard in my local country town in England. There was a fowl pest scare on at the time and live birds were not allowed to be taken from the market. the women would sit with a crate full off bird beside them., pull each  one out, wring it's neck and pluck it - all within about five minutes per bird. It was truly an amazing sight. My father used to kill our chooksfor the table by wringing their necks too. It was pretty quick and I doubt very much whether they suffered..

I saw it on telly years ago, the poultry production line and I still have those images stuck in my head.

I remember the good old days of Granny chopping of the chooks head, and having a headless chook running at you. Gvae us kids nightmares

Goes to show how much you know - Australia already bans in place for the slaughter of animals without stunning them first.

The only time an animal is not stunned is for religious festivals. Muslims don't have a religious festival that requires this. Jewish people do.

But sadly I know that this thread (like ALL of the others) isn't about animal cruelty. Nor is it about the Jewish race...is it?)
