After watching "The Conjuring" last night, I've been undecided as to whether houses, or other buildings, are actually haunted. What does everyone think? Are hauntings real or not?

I think there are lots of different experiences, there are hauntings, there are timeline visitors ect.
Hubby and experienced, I believe, a timeling visitor.
We have experiences all the time, all four of us.

When my son was very young I was preparing some stuff he needed for a primary school excursion. Both sons were asleep in bed and I was otherwise alone in the house. I was searching through the third drawer down looking for a safety pin to pin his name tag on to his school shirt but couldn't find one and it was late so I thought I would just temporarily sew it on in the morning.
The next morning, there was a white envelope on the kitchen dresser and it had a safety pin sitting on top of it.
That was not my only experience with a ghost in that kitchen.
That's helpful.......

MP: "Of course the money is safe - due to the criteria. (I gather you are not aware of what they are otherwise you would not make that statement).
I am well aware MP, as the criteria is along the same lines as that required to substantiate a scientific experiment/conclusion, and there has never been an authenticated para-normal event.
I believe you believe in whatever you want, sans any sort of research or logic, but that still does not make it so.

In order to establish the serious nature of the application, at least one of the three following items must be provided with this application:
The Applicant agrees that all materials and peripheral properties (photographic, recorded, written, etc.) gathered as a result of the test procedure, the protocol, and the actual testing, may be used freely by the JREF.
Monman: "I believe you believe in whatever you want, sans any sort of research or logic, but that still does not make it so."
I believe what you believe (in this case) is irrelevant. What I know lies outside "the range of scientific explanation". It does NOT mean it does not exist.

Of course there have been. They are now considered "normal".

I've had a number of ghostly experiences.
Years ago I rented an Edwardian house. It hadn't been renovated and still had all the original fittings. A few nights after me and my young kids moved in I wanted to place a light bulb in the original art deco light fitting in the master bedroom on the wall opposite my bed. I placed the globe in the fitting, turned on the switch and walked into the kitchen to put the empty box in the bin then walked straight back to the bedroom.
The light globe was on my bed. Remember the bed was on the opposite side of the room from the light fitting. If the globe had just fallen out it would have landed on the floor. Not jumped all across the room onto the middle of my bed. BTW My kids were in bed fast asleep. I'd only left the room for 30 seconds.
Later that night I saw a wispy tall slender woman in her 70's, wearing her long hair in a bun, standing in the hallway. I stopped dead in my tracks, took a few deep breaths then said "I understand this is your house and out of respect for you and your memories I promise I won't use the light fitting again but please respect that we are living here too". Then she vanished.
I didn't have more ghostly experiences after that.
However, 6 months later ... my young son got chatting to the elderly woman living over the back fence and he invited her over for 'afternoon tea'. We were chatting and she told me a lady and her husband built the house and lived in it for 60 odd years before they passed on. I asked the woman what did the lady of the house look like. She said ... word for word ...
"She was tall and slender and wore her hair in a bun".

The scariest ghostly type experience that happened to me...........
My children and I were sitting at our kitchen table having breakfast one Saturday morning around 8.00am.
My youngest was in a highchair. The doors were closed, the windows were closed as the morning air was too cold.
Suddenly, we heard what sounded like a large bird flying around the kitchen screeching, we all ducked our heads down onto the table even though we couldn't see anything.
Next, the framed picture of my daughter flew off the wall, and landed at her feet upside down.......the screeching stopped.
We sat there stunned for quite a while in disbelief........
Eventually, I got up and walked to where the picture was at her feet. On inspection, the picture had no damage..not even one crack in the glass............the creepy thing is, the picture flew on a curve to get to where it landed.
There were no birds in the house....
I have never been able to come up with an explanation for that......., and there have been other events.

MP, your 3 points have nothing to do with scientific testing, only what a person must present as grounds to be accepted for scientific investigation/testing
Former stage magician James Randi is a well-known investigator of paranormal claims. As an investigator with a background in illusion, Randi feels that the simplest explanation for those claiming paranormal abilities is often trickery, illustrated by demonstrating that the spoon bending abilities of psychic Uri Geller can easily be duplicated by trained stage magicians. He is also the founder of the James Randi Educational Foundation and its million dollar challenge offering a prize of US $1,000,000 to anyone who can demonstrate evidence of any paranormal, supernatural or occult power or event, under test conditions agreed to by both parties. Despite many declarations of supernatural ability, this prize remains unclaimed.
Independent Investigations Group, offers a prize if a claimant can prove a paranormal claim under 2 scientifically controlled tests. Founded in 2000 no claimant has passed the first (and lower odds) of the test.
MP: " What I know lies outside "the range of scientific explanation". It does NOT mean it does not exist."
Actually it is only what you believe you know MP, and without scientific verification remains just that, a belief, which is hardly compelling.
Personally I think a belief in ghosts etc, could well be a reluctance by some (albeit subconscious) to face up to one's mortality or that of others, often past family members, or just a lack of scientific curiosity/knowledge.

Your opinion doesn't seem to gel with my experience MM......
When an adult and a couple of children all see, hear and experience the same thing, at the same time.
Are young children questioning there own mortality over breakfast?......
A couple of weeks after our experience, I was inspecting the picture, trying to work out how it could be lifted and fly around on a curve,
when my son asked if the picture flew off the wall again.....
.....I would love to hear a scientific explanation for what happened......any ideas?
