Have Universal tv remotes improved to able to work on more and more TV brands?

Has the technology improved in the last 5 or 10 years so that universal remotes will work on a wider range of tv's or universal remote controls have only improved in general.

Well the last one I bought a couple of months ago didnt work on either of my TVs, but I could use it to turn my portable cooler on and off.
