RADIO AND TV personality Derryn Hinch has criticised the decision made by Australian celebrities to call for mercy for Bali Nine masterminds Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan, saying their campaign is “hypocritical”.

“In Indonesia, they know that when they commit crimes like this, then you could get the death penalty.

“I say hypocritical because are these people who are up there who are saying ‘I stand for mercy’ — is that for Australian drug dealers or Australians on death row, or for everybody?”

“I mean did they stand up a week ago and say ‘I stand for mercy’ for the Brazilian who was executed in Indonesia, or the one from the Netherlands, or the Indonesian woman or somebody from Malawi? Or is it just Australians?,” he said.

He also questioned whether those celebrities involved in the video were against the death penalty in general, or if they were only against capital punishment for specific offences.

“Also if you are against the death penalty, are you against the death penalty for all offences?,” he asked.

“Are you against the death penalty say for the terrorists? Did you try and campaign to try and save the lives of the Bali Bombers?,” he said.

“Did we put our hands up and say show them clemency? Don’t execute them.”

He concluded with his view: “If you’re going to say ‘I stand for mercy’, stand for mercy for everybody, if you’re against the death penalty, be against it for everybody. you can’t be a little bit pregnant,” he added.

Kinda makes sense to me.

Only two up for immediate chance of execution at present? I just think that Myuran S especially, has touched a chord with people because of they way he has taken to improving others life in prison with the art classes, art available for sale (prisoners need money for food), and his own studies and learning about art.

If they both had just been sitting in a corner for 10 years complaining and being non-compliant in prison might be different.

Ben Quilty, artist, has had a lot to do with Myruan, giving his time etc, so maybe he organised the celeb thing.

 Not just words from him, he has personal experience with the two due for execution.

And the question is why should the foreigners deserve different treatment?  That is the point some people here are missing.  If these 2 deserve pardon, why not the rest?   Or do you think that Indonesia should have one law for locals and different law for Australians?

It is great that these 2 guys are helping others and doing positive things, but my guess is that many of the Indonesian prisoners do not have an access to Australian university course.

Apart from what these 2 Australian prisoners have done to help other prisoners, those 'celebrities' make no mention of the other prisoners.

They seem to have missed the point that its about people not nationalities.

Its not about 'celebrities' who perhaps benefit from jumping on a feelgood bandwagon.

And to go on from that if I may...

It's about recognizing someones positive actions toward rehabilitation.  The fact of it is those other prisoners dont get mentioned because they dont do anything to help others, not that I'm being critical of them, it must be a living hell in prison over there. But it is extremely noble, when someone really makes an effort for others even when they are on death row.  It's not the sign of a great actor or heartless drug dealer, it's the sign of someone who really is trying to make amends for the crimes he committed and what better way than to improve the quality of life for your fellow inmates.  Maybe some who read this might think, who cares about their quality of life, they're prisoners.  And I'd say not me if they had done heinous crimes but (maybe someone can be bothered googling) I wonder how many are in there just for drug related offences.  Being caught in the posession of drugs is not the same as brutally raping and or killing someone or armed robbery or any other horrendous crime imaginable.  jmo.

God I remember that horrible scene in Nicole Kidman's The Bangkok Hilton where the friend (Joy Smithers the actress) was executed. Wouldn't be a nice way to go.
