I think there needs to be some common sense built into this repatriation of criminals back to NZ.  In a lot of the cases, the deportee has spent all but the first year or two of their life in Australia and their families are also here.  It is quite a stretch in those cases to hold NZ responsible for their  criminal behaviour.  Australia "raised" them so needs to carry the responsibility.

Totally different if the person was raised in and spent their formative years in NZ and then travelled to Australia and committed crime/s here.  In those cases I completely agree with them being repatriated to NZ once they have served their sentence here(and I'd bet Jacinda Adern does too.)

The ones being deported may have lived nearly all of their lives here, but they haven't bothered to become citizens. If they had, they wouldn't be deported.

So if you're a kiwi and you want to commit a crime but not be sent back to NZ, become a citizen of the country you live in, instead of hedging your bets.

Because of the symbiotic relationship between AU and NZ it's not as simple or obvious as that sounds. The rules keep changing.

When I arrived in Australia it was during the brief period when I didn't need a passport or visa and I was also entitled to be registered on the AU electoral role. So for many years I lived, worked, voted and paid taxes without being an Australian citizen.
Now, if I had brought a baby or young child with me at the time they could be one of the people Ardern is referring to. I'm sure any thinking person wouldn't agree that that child would not be a New Zealander.

That's funny lionrose. Dutton sends him to N.Z for siphoning $millions and yet that's exactly what this government's done to buy an election victory. So far it's over $250 million and counting.

It is very expensive these days to get Aus citizenship last I heard it was $4000 each may be more now.

My father was born in Aus and when I went for my citizenship they said dont worry about that they where given it away at the time cost $140 and lunch with the Mayor Gold Coast LOL

So it just boils down to the costs?! Thought it was racism or something.

Those folks better not break any laws then

1 guy had been in Aus for 20+ years had a wife 2 children and a trucking company, paid taxes, no crime record

His only crime he was friendly with a gang deported back to NZ where he had no family.

I am a citizen of both countries

Guilty by association? now that is just plain ridiculous

Re: How dare you send our crims back!

i'm not an expert on nz/aussie relationship

i can only go on whats reported and what heard reported was

ms arderns popularity at home is flagging

so she needs to do something to get her popularity on the up

scomo sending convicted new zealanders back is not new

and as we know hes never going to change his mind, on anything.

has the thing been over the top, like sending people who have lived almost all their lives here back, sure has.

but thats the scomo way

but ms ardern will have a go so on the telly people will see her standing up to the big bully australia.

its all politics

ms ardern has a problem at home she cant fix, her coalition partner in govt, her deputy pm in particular, is causing headaches.

but she cant do or say anything because if he pulls his support for her in govt, shes out of business.

and anyone whos watched any of that guy on telly knows hes a very odd man.
