How do you explain this to someone?

I was trying to explain to a friend why AFL footy was so important and exciting to watch that I have to miss a dinner gathering because of it. All I could come up with it just is. She just gave me a stare like I'm out of my mind.

How do you explain to someone who has no concept of why sport can be such big part of someone's life even though it might not directly affect it?

So explain to me why Freo winning matters in your life? Shouldn't you care more about the crisis in Syria?

I can take a break from worrying for one day...
I'll get back to it tomorrow ok?

I probably wouldn't say 'Sport makes me feel alive and you don't ' unless you don't want any more dinner invitations.

Ah, see bob, your fundamental problem is putting so much importance on AFL. Now, if it were the NRL Finals or any Super Rugby game I'd be with you 😛

Actually I follow pretty much all sports including NRL and union. So how do you explain to someone why these things matter?

you can't because they don't matter.

the only thing you can do is evoke empathy.

you shouldn't need to explain anything to a friend.

they should just accept you for who you are - footy lover and all.

if youre not directly involved in the game then i'd say its a cop out, good excuse if you dont want to attend the dinner party though
