especially when its over someone's behaviour and you can't confront them because it would cause an irrepairable rift in the family?

OMG 40 years? 😮
I've only had to put up with this for two years
:^O
early days yet........
she objected to us living together...... she objected to me marrying into the family.......
long list... I smiled to her face, cried in private..... bit my tongue lots for my children and OH..... she hurt some people I love last week... today she is grovelling but it gives me no pleasure.

I think I'd go cuckoo if it goes on for 40 years, hopefully I'll die of old age before then

Better still, write the letter and send it. You will be relieved of your anger but the other person will be P- - - - - off.

Simply talking about it with a friend can be very cathartic 🙂

Is it like a one off occasion of regrettable bad behaviour or ongoing bad behaviour?
I ask because I myself put up with years of bad behaviour so as not to cause a rift, the bad behaviour escalated because nobody ever dared reign this person in and she was making my life a complete misery. Rift or not, I cut her out. I was prepared to risk everybody just to not to have to put up with her carp anymore. Sometimes the cost is just too high and it was making me very ill.

I've got no anger because she's not even worthy of that.
