A large crack has appeared on Melbourne's West Gate Bridge, closing two lanes and sparking traffic delays.
The crack has closed two inbound lanes near Williamstown Road, reducing traffic to three lanes and a 40km/h speed limit.
Motorists have been advised to expect delays throughout the day.
VicRoads maintenance workers are currently on the scene assessing the damage.
Road works were undertaken on the bridge at Christmas.
Whoa! That's not a good omen is it? Are they thinking recent roadworks did the damage or affected the structure of the bridge?

I use to live just two streets from this amazing bridge... I use to feel sick every time I had to drive over it so lucky I lived on the city side.. lol
Maybe the weather has made the asphalt crack???
I hope it is not the structure itself.

Maybe all the over 40 days has cracked the asphalt like cat said.
I really hate going over that bridge, glad it is on the other side of the city and only go over it once every couple of yrs.

I'd be very wary of driving over it with that big crack in it!

"A large crack has appeared in Melbourne's West Gate Bridge, but authorities say there are no structural defects. " If the cracks were structural the whole bridge would have been closed.
I love that bridge, both looking at it and its sweeping curve from distance, and driving over and looking over Melbourne at different times of the day, and different weather.
