The thing is though that not having the six self serves doesn't mean that they would have six regular check outs open. Probably only one or two and the wait to be served would be long.
The Woolworths I go to sometimes doesn't have self serve checkouts and yet they never seem to have more than 2 or 3 checkouts open. It usually takes me about 20 minutes to get out of there when I finish shopping. They just don't want to pay extra wages so the customer waits.

Really? Wow!! That's a bit of a shock. I don't shop in IGA that often but now again I do for a change. It is pretty quiet.
One of the girls at Coles told me that they lost some custom when the Spud Shed opened but now people are coming back because as they say, the fruit and veg over there is a bit second rate and it's only good if you buy in bulk.
I still haven't been over there yet. I get confused with the name and keep calling it the Potato Factory because of Bryce Courtenay's book.

The selfserve checkouts at the Coles near me were the large ones. I liked being able to pack my shopping exactly how I wanted it.
Recently they changed all of them over to the small ones with enough room for three chocolate bars and a litre of milk.
no change to the staff at the regular checkouts; two people max. at any time during the day including peak traffic.
I now shop at Woolies. As do a lot more locals. There are no selfserve checkouts there and most aisles are manned.
the Woolies opened only a couple of years ago, and had been struggling a little compared with Coles. Not anymore.

I dislike them also, rarely use them in fact probably only about twice. I much prefer people and a smiling face. I also would rather wait and be served. It keeps people in jobs. Basically the store will have to respond to customer demand so if we all stay with waiting to be served the self serve checkouts will hopefully never take off.

Where's the sense and logic to that?
I shop at woolies and they always take the first person who has not started to load their shopping onto the bench.
I've seen them take entire lines of shoppers from one checkout to another keeping them in order.
It annoys me when the auto tellers don't take all forms of payments. Like when you don't have cash etc and the first place open can't take cash, or the same with cards. Especially when you need cash out but the machine won't dispense any.
Auto cashiers were and are inevitable, but at least they should work!
