I Helped An Elderly Gent Yesterday.

In the Supermarked. I was doing some fruit and veg shopping and noticed him struggling to open the produce bag. I've struggled with them before so I wondered if I should help him or would he feel I was being patronised.

As I walked past him I jokingly said, "you have to spit on it"! I always wet my thumb and index finger to open the bags.

We laughed and he went pretendy "ptui ptui" on the bag.

I went around and got some tomatoes and deliberated whether I should get the lemons from USA or limes from Aus.

When I looked up he was still patiently struggling with the bag.

I felt bad then about the flippant spit comment and said "can I help you"? He gave me the bag and I showed him how I lick my thumb and finger and the bag opened straight away! (It's not always that easy).

Anyway we had shared another laugh about it and went about our shopping.

I had to get the fruit and veg guy to help me with mine once.

I get a bit grumpy about importing fruit from overseas when so many of our own orchards were ploughed into the grounds.

Frustrating...they do the same here. I can't tell where the veggies come from though(edit: or fruits). Also never tasted a lime, might give it try next time.

I know, she-el, not everyone welcomes help, some feel it's patronising.

I will usually pause and if they want help they make eye contact or make a comment. Last week it wasn't because she was old, but she was to short to reach it. So, I just asked...... <<<worked in my own appraisal!!

If she accused me of being patronizing I would have just said "I never offered you money".

Imported fruit and vegetable make me angry too. I refuse to buy them.

We can grow everything here in Australia, some items all year round as seasons change in different States.

I live in a country town with only one Supermarket, but we have weekend Markets in several small towns where homegrown fruit and vegetables are sold. We can even buy locally made cheeses and wine, all very comparable in price with the Supermarket.

Every week I get the local paper to see where the next Markets are held, and rather go there for what I need, than travel to the next big town to buy imports from other Supermarkets.

Yes I agree with you Lind.

The supermarket near me is the only place around where I live that has figs, I refuse to pay the price they want and they are imported. I have been to some of the markets around, but cant find figs.

When I was a child, we had a fig tree and my love for figs came from there...........I may have to end up planting a fig tree to get home grown ones.

I have no idea why they have to import fruit from overseas, when everything is grown here in Aust.

Imported lemons are ridiculously expensive, local ones are still pricey. I bought a single one for 80c and it went off about 2 days later before I had even used it.

When the lemons cost $2 ea here at Coles, that's when I started buying limes. I've really acquired a taste for them now they've got a little extra tang that lingers on the palate. I go through about 5 lemons or limes a week.

I use them to squeeze the juice over my salads and in my tea.
