As we all know, in most movies based on a book the film-makers take a few liberties with the original story - but this goes WAY BEYOND a few liberties.
Whether you believe the Bible is the word of God or not - in this case the movie bears only very fleeting resemblance to the original story. I mean there is an Ark, a guy named Noah, some animals and lots of water and there's where the similarity ends.

Me ? I'm still dirty about Noah leaving the unicorns behind.
In case no-one has noticed, not a religious bone in my body, but I have much respect for those that do (and keep it to themselves).
Carry on
My bones feel the same.
But did put Pantheist on the last Census as my religion.
I respect ALL the GODS.
This includes Zeus.
Always keeps me safe from argument.

Old BC comedy.
foo-bar foo-bar foo-bar {sawing} - "Noah, it's the Lord" - "I want you to build an ark - make it 40 cubits by ...".
Noah : "Right!" - "What's a cubit?"
Noah : ".... who is this really? Am I on Candid Camera".
Lord:"I'm going to make it rain for a thousand days and a thousand nights".
Noah: "I've got a better idea Lord - make it rain for 40 days and wait till the sewers back up".
Lord:" Right".
Noah:" You got 2 male elephants there Lord - No, I ain't going to fetch another one - you change one of them"
Lord: "Noah......... . How long can you tread water?"
Noah building ark, neigbour comes out "What are you doing Noah?" - "I'm bulding an ark" - neigbour:" You wanna get it out of my driveway".
We have all his old albums.

Did the two scrub ticks walk in on their own, or were they riding on a dog?

You are really on to something deep here.

Yes! One really has to submerge oneself into the depths of philosophical absurdity to see the wonders of creation and evolution throughout the immense bucket ....

Why could Noah not have left the spiders behind and taken the unicorns instead?

according to the movie, he probably did, but that stowaway ate them .... he was partial to a bit of unicorn whereas nothing much to eat on a spider - except the big hairy ones.

"Why could Noah not have left the spiders behind and taken the unicorns instead?"
Great question Bushie ...
Could it be because there would have been far too many legs on board the ark then, eight legs versus 4 on each beastie?
Other problem would have been the old primal neanderthal thing about spiders, fight or flight, leading to just about every woman jumping overboard to escape? (I'd have been first off)

I lost faith in the movie when Noah fired up the outboard motors..........
