'I'm going to come after you'

Peter Dutton has said the government will come after possible crime syndicates who have been clearing supermarket shelves amid the coronavirus pandemic.

'They're hoarding, not for their own consumption, I think they're either sending some of the products overseas or they're selling it in a black market arrangement in Australia.

'I'm going to come after those people. It won't be a pretty experience when we deal with them.

'We will come down like a ton of bricks on those individuals because I think they're the ones that have created this pattern of behaviour of hoarding and clearing out shelves.'

Locals in regional Victoria have been left outraged over city residents who have been swarming into town to clear out supermarkets in a panic-buying frenzy.

In America a gross hoarder ( recall 17,000 units ) for profit had to donate his bounty to charity.... not idea how he was convinced to do so ...

talk is cheap, just what law is he going to dream up to 'get these black marketeers'

i doubt even 1 so called black marketeer will be prosecuted.

its just all about the 4 second tv news grab.

Given he quoted Border Force as one of his weapons, I doubt he has any firm idea. I'm fairly sure, even though they wear black uniforms, that BF has no jurisdiction over anything that doesn't cross the NATIONAL border.

The US has strict laws on price gouging and profiteering so I'm sure it would have been pretty easy to convince them.

Couldn't agree more - and how is ebay allowing individuals to sell toilet paper and handsanitiser for riduculous prices -and profit from the sale - i have noted one "new seller" on ebay is selling a 200ml dettol hand santitiser for $70.00 - outrageous and at a time when communities need to come together and support each other !!!  I think ebay has a responsibility to shut down sellers who have stockpiled hard to source products like toilet paper and hand sanitize to make a profit...

Get the ATO on to them as they are selling in commercial quantities in a manner that meets ATO definition of a viable business

And how do you know they are not running a business?

The ATO cannot do anything until it is proved that they are evading their tax obligations.

Yes, I hope he comes down on them like a ton of bricks.

But the bit I've bolded has confused me with another item I read -

Just as people were encouraged to and bring their empty eskies to bushfire-ravaged communities, the importance of supporting local businesses in regional areas is again being emphasised.

https://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/coronavirus-heralds-return-of-bushfire-mantra-to-support-local-b...

So which is it?

I guess you didn't click through to read the rest of the article. Don't worry, I rarely click through links either:

The shortage of supplies has sparked concerns for vulnerable residents of small towns such as the elderly or pregnant women, who are no longer able to find goods at their local shops.

'Buses of people have been coming in the last few days. People are coming from as far as Mornington,' Melissa Clark, from Woodend, which has a population of about 5,400 people, told the Herald Sun.

'We just need a break. We love having tourists here in Woodend - but not supermarket tourists.'

I guess you didn't read my link properly in the first place! Woman Very Happy

The country towns need ppl to come, stay there and spend money on goods and services to revive business in the towns.

Not come and strip them of essential goods and then ping off.

I don't see how my link is advocating swarms of people decending on towns to deplete them of their goods.

But you know best.     Have at it.
